Individual Leaders
The #15 ranked Cal State San Marcos Women's Golf Team improved their score from Monday's opening round, but couldn't quite hold on to win the CSUSM Lady Cougar Invitational, finishing second to the Academy of Art Tuesday afternoon at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos.
After an opening round of 320 that left them tied for first with the Academy of Art, the Cougars and Urban Knights dueled it out over the final 18 holes, each improving their score from the day before. CSUSM fired a 319 on Tuesday, giving them a 36-hole total of 639, but Academy of Art, a NCAA Division II school from San Francisco, recorded a 316 and won the tournament by 3 strokes with a final score of 636.
The Cougars were the top finishing NAIA school, 8 strokes ahead of #14 Concordia (OR) and 43 above #21 Point Loma.
Individually,
Lisa Copeland (78-76, 154) nearly pulled off the overall title, finishing tied for 2nd, one stroke back of winner Sunshine Powers of Concordia (OR). Copeland 's 76 was the 2
nd best round of the day, behind teammate
Tess Russell who's final round 74 was the best of the entire tournament. Russell finished tied for 5
th overall at 158.
Felicia Titus put together another solid round for San Marcos Tuesday, finishing 10
th with a final score of 163 (81-82).
Vanessa Chap, who was in second place after Day 1 struggled on the back nine in the final round, but still finished 11
th overall (77-87). Cora McClung was the final member of the CSUSM 'A' Team, shooting a 91 for the second straight day and finishing 26
th.
The Cal State San Marcos 'B' Team fared pretty well, with 3 top-20 finishers overall. Annelise Frederikson improved her score tremendously from Monday, shooting an 84 in the final round and jumping up to 19
th place at 174.
Stephanie Cole (88-88) and
Amanda Rudd (89-87) each tied for 20
th by shooting 176 for the tournament. Leinati Luniu finished 27
th overall with a 183.
The Cougars will play next at the Cal Baptist Spring Invitational in Riverside March 4
th-6
th.
