SDCC, Arizona Christian Classic On Tap for Cougars


SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team heads to El Cajon to face San Diego Christian before traveling east for the Arizona Christian University Women's Basketball Classic.

Road Warriors
After this week, the Cougars will have played 11 of their first 14 games away from home to start the 2012-13 season.  CSUSM is 2-6 thus far on the road and has dropped five straight road games since back-to-back wins over William Jessup and UC Merced on Nov. 3 and 4, respectively. The Cougars were 9-8 on the road in 2011-12, making them 11-14 on the road all-time.

Menlo, Simpson Down Cougars
CSUSM dropped a pair of games on back-to-back nights against Simpson (Calif.) and Menlo last week. Anna Nguyen led the team with 12 points against the Red Hawks, while Sherika Miller scored a career-high 22 against the Oaks on Saturday. The loss on Saturday against Menlo was the sixth straight for the Cougars.

Coop Near The Hoop
Forward Danielle Cooper has been quite the defensive presence for the Cougars this year and ranks in the top 10 nationally in a number of defensive statistics. She ranks first in NAIA Division I with 26 blocks, second in total rebounds (133), fourth in rebounds per game (12.09), sixth in blocks per game (2.36) and offensive rebounds per game (5.091), and 10th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0). She's currently averaging a double-double through 11 games, with 12.2 PPG and 13.1 RPG.

In The Lane
The Cougars have been making a living in the paint so far this year and rank in the NAIA top 10 in a number of categories: they're third in total blocks (52), third in total rebound offense (514), fifth in rebounds per game (46.73), seventh in blocks per game (4.73), eighth in total rebound margin (11.364) and ninth in defensive rebounds per game (30.09).

Thieves of San Marcos
The Cougars are 10th in total steals in NAIA Division I with 127 over their first 11 games. Leading the way is Sarah Jackson, who's 35 steals rank seventh nationally. Her 3.18 average SPG average is 21st in the nation. She's recorded at least one steal in every game this year and has registered three or more steals in seven contests.

Home At Last
The Cougars will be home for the holidays, well the first part of the holidays, that is. Following the ACU Basketball Classic, CSUSM will play four consecutive home games at MiraCosta College against Ashford (Dec. 14), Clarke (Dec. 17), Concordia (Dec. 18) and Roosevelt (Dec. 21). Following the Dec. 25 holiday, CSUSM travels to Las Vegas for a tournament to play Montana Western (Dec. 27), Montana Tech (Dec. 28) and Carroll (Dec. 29).
