EL CAJON, Calif.— Looking to end a tough stretch and get back in the win column, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team came up just short on the road against San Diego Christian Tuesday, falling 66-60 at the Ryan Athletic Center.
The Cougars looked strong early, grabbing the lead early and extending it to 19-13 with 8:11 remaining in the first half. The Hawks would regain the lead after a 9-0 run, but CSUSM led at halftime 28-25.
San Diego Christian led for the majority of the second half, but the Cougars tied the score at 55-55 with 6:59 remaining. The Hawks would regain the lead for the remainder of the contest, although the Cougars made it interesting by closing the gap to 63-60 with 1:21 to play.
It was not to be however, and the Cougars dropped their seventh straight to drop to 3-9 on the season. San Diego Christian improved to 5-4 on the year.
The Cougars outscored the Hawks in the paint 32-26, but San Diego Christian capitalized off of CSUSM miscues by scoring 28 points off San Marcos turnovers.
Danielle Cooper had a huge game for CSUSM, tallying her fifth double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points (7-11 FG, 7-8 FT) and 10 rebounds. The NAIA's leader in blocks also added two more to her season total.
Sherika Miller chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three steals for San Marcos. The Cougars will hit the road again Friday as they face Rocky Mountain College in Phoenix, Arizona for the first game of the Arizona Christian Women's Basketball Classic.
