Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak snapped by Roosevelt University (Ill.), 66-48, on Friday night at MiraCosta College.
Sherika Miller tallied 15 points and nine rebounds while
Alexandria Alvarado and
Sarah Jackson scored 10 apiece, but the Cougars could not survive a field-goal drought spanning 9:02 midway through the second half against the Lakers.
CSUSM drops to 8-10 overall while Roosevelt improves to 11-3.
In an odd ruling before the game, the Lakers were granted two technical foul shots due to an inoperative light on the gym's backboards. Roosevelt made 1-of-2, so the Cougars and Lakers tipped off with Roosevelt already leading, 1-0.
The Lakers eventually increased their lead to 7-0 out of the gate, but the Cougars recovered to tie the game at 13-13.
Jessica Harris found Alvarado on a fast-break to give CSUSM its first lead of the game, 18-17, at the 8:28 mark.
Harris hit a 3-pointer to make it 25-22 two minutes later, but Maria Tamburrino answered with a three and a jumper with 4:05 left to give the Lakers a 29-27 lead.
After Miller hit a jumper to pull even at 29-29, Jennie Van Hook hit 1-of-2 free shots to give Roosevelt a 30-29 edge at the break.
The Lakers were able to extend their lead to 41-35 six minutes into the second stanza. Miller hit a jumper to pull within four at the 13:13 mark and Jackson hit a pair of free throws to make it 41-39.
CSUSM was granted an opportunity to tie the game when Alvarado drew a foul on a dribble drive, but both shots from the stripe were off target.
From there, Roosevelt put together a 13-1 stretch before Alvarado hit a runner in the paint at the 4:11 mark with the Cougars down 54-42.
After the teams traded baskets, the Lakers hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the game out of reach.
Both teams were cold from the floor; Roosevelt shot 39.7% (23-of-58) while CSUSM shot 26.9% (18-of-67).
The loss marks CSUSM's first since falling at San Diego Christian 66-60 on Dec. 4.
The Cougars will travel to Las Vegas Dec. 27-29 for contests against Montana Western, Montana Tech and Carroll College.
