Sunbirds Top Cougars 91-83 in Season Opener

FRESNO, Calif. – Danielle Cooper registered school records with 31 points and 18 rebounds, but the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team fell 91-83 to Fresno Pacific on Friday evening at the Special Events Center.

Cooper went 13-for-19 from the field while adding nine boards in each half. Her point total broke the previous school record of 25, held by Justine Chacon (Jan. 9, 2012 at La Verne) and Cassie Damyanovich (Nov. 19, 2011 at Corban). Her 18 boards broke her own mark of 17, set on Nov. 26, 2011 at Cal State San Bernardino.

Point guard Sarah Jackson pitched in with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sherika Miller scored 12 on 6-for-11 shooting. CSUSM edged FPU in the field-goal percentage category, 49.3% (36-for-73) to 47.8% (33-for-69), and outscored the Sunbirds, 64-42, in the paint.

However, FPU capitalized for 25 points on 28 Cougar turnovers and led from the 18:29 mark in the first half on. Keairra White and Charde Stevens scored 24 and 23, respectively, for the Sunbirds.

The Cougars trailed by five four minutes in, but Cooper and Jackson scored on successive possessions to pull within 10-9 at the 16:14 mark. After MacKenzie Harnett scored to make it 23-22, FPU went on an 8-0 over the next two minutes to lead 31-23 with 6:11 left.

CSUSM answered with an 8-1 run of its own to get back within two, 32-30, with 4:06 left. The Sunbirds extended their lead back to 10, but Heather Thompson and Jackson registered lay-ups to get within seven, 43-36, at the half.

Trailing by 10 at the 13:30 mark, the Cougars scored seven straight points to pull within three, 64-61, with just over nine minutes remaining. FPU answered with another 8-0 run to take its biggest lead to that point, 72-61, with 8:20 left.

Michel'la Logan's put back made it 86-81 with 31 seconds remaining, but it would be the closest the Cougars would get. White drained three free throws between the next two possessions to make it a three-point game.

CSUSM (0-1) has two more games remaining on its weekend road trip. The Cougars play William Jessup in Rocklin on Saturday and UC Merced on Sunday.

FPU played Friday evening's game as an exhibition.
