The Cal State San Marcos Women's Basketball team nearly pulled off a big upset Thursday, battling #8 Hastings (Neb) until the final buzzer before falling 57-54. The Cougars had a chance to push the game into overtime with two seconds remaining but a
Sidney Dobner 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good, sealing the victory for the Broncos.
Hastings is a perennial national championship contender, winning 3 NAIA titles in the last 9 years, but Cal State San Marcos proved that they definitely can compete in that upper echelon. The Cougars held a 48-46 lead with 7:31 remaining in the second half, but were only able to score 6 points down the stretch, leading to the Bronco comeback.
Danielle Cooper had a big night for the Cougars, scoring a game-high 18 points on 9 of 14 shooting, in addition to 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Sidney Dobner added 10 points and 6 assists on the afternoon, but 25 team turnovers came back to haunt San Marcos, as they held Hastings to only 29.7% shooting.
CSUSM, now 8-11 on the season, plays again tomorrow in the final game of the Biola Holiday Classic. The Cougars will face #12 Kansas Wesleyan as they look to end the calendar year with a victory over a ranked NAIA opponent.
