Cal State San Marcos women's basketball earned a much-needed road win Saturday night – over an NCAA Division II opponent no less – as the Cougars knocked off Cal State Dominguez-Hills 54-43.
CSUSM improves to 6-8 on the season and snaps a brief two-game losing streak. Dominguez-Hills drops to 1-8.
Defense was the name of the game for San Marcos on Saturday, as the Cougars clamped down to hold the Toros to just 27.5% shooting for the game. The visitors won the turnover battle as well, committing 19 against their opponents' 24, and knocked down a very respectable 13 of 18 free throw attempts (72.2%). CSUSM also held a slight rebounding advantage, 36 to 33.
It was all enough for the Cougars to overcome a so-so shooting night of their own (36.7%).
Sidney Dobner turned in yet another gutty performance, shooting just 5-for-13 from the field but scoring 18 points, thanks largely to a fine 8-of-11 performance from the line, to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists, leading the team in all three categories.
Meanwhile, Justin Chacone followed up her finest game in Cougar blue with another strong outing, scoring 11 points to go with 7 rebounds while committing just 3 turnovers in 32 minutes. Chacone shot 3-for-5 from three.
Thanks to the strong free throw shooting and lockdown defense, CSUSM was able to close out Saturday's win very effectively. From the tip-off, both teams stayed within a few points of one another until a Michel'La Logan three pointer put CSUSM up two with 3:06 left in the first half. That was followed by a turnover and Chacon three, giving CSUSM a game-high five point lead.
Dominguez-Hills cut the lead to a single point with four minutes left, but four consecutive Dobner free-throws pushed it back to five. That was followed by two Chacon free throws, and back-to-back jumpers by Dobner that sealed the win.
CSUSM will look to continue the momentum next Sunday at Dixie State.
