Facing their fourth consecutive road game against an NCAA Division II opponent to start their inaugural season, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team picked up an extremely impressive road victory over Grand Canyon University Thursday night, 64-59 in overtime.
The game was officially an exhibition for both teams.
Playing on the road against the #14-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Cal State San Marcos clamped down and executed its game plan to perfection to pick up the win.
“Our defense was very good,” noted Assistant Coach Andrea Picchi. “Our game plan was to force them into shots from the perimeter, and for the most part we did that.”
CSUSM held Grand Canyon to 37% shooting for the game, including just 2-for-18 on three point attempts. For the Cougars' part, CSUSM shot 47% for the game and hit 6-of-11 from behind the arc. That was enough to overcome 35% free throw shooting (6/17) for the game.
Coming off a triple double against Chico State, point guard
Sidney Dobner tallied a game-high 17 points to go along with 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Along with Dobner's usual excellence, the Cougars got huge boosts from
Sarah Jackson (11 points, 4 rebounds), Michel'La Logan (12 points, 7 rebounds), and
Cassie Damyanovich (14 points on 6-for-9 shooting).
“Every player on our team contributed to this win,” noted Picchi.
The Cougars held a lead late in regulation, but Grand Canyon closed the gap to force overtime. CSUSM would prevail, however, shooting 4-for-6 in the extra frame and holding Grand Canyon to 3-for-9.
With an official record of 0-2 but two very impressive wins in exhibition games, the Cougars will play their first local game next Friday, taking on the University of San Diego.
