Cal State San Marcos women's basketball rebounded from Friday night's tough 22-point loss to pull out a close victory on the road Saturday night, defeating Corban University 77-74.
The Cougars improve to 3-5 in their inaugural season and are now 2-1 with one game left on their Oregon road trip. Corban drops to 1-2.
In what was a tightly contested contest throughout all 40 minutes, the Cougars prevailed by limiting themselves to 14 turnovers and shooting 53.3% from three (8-for-15). That was enough to survive a 50% shooting game from Corban.
CSUSM also won because the team got major scoring contributions from three players:
Cassie Damyanovich,
Sidney Dobner, and
Justine Chacon.
Damyanovich exploded for a game-high 25 points off the bench, shooting 10-for-18 and knocking down 3 of her 4 attempts from three. She added a game-high 9 rebounds in what was without question her best performance as a Cougar.
Dobner, the team's point guard who has struggled the last couple games, was back in fine form Saturday night, scoring 20 points and getting to the free throw line 10 times. She tallied 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals to complete a very nice game for her.
And Chacon, who has been up and down this year but can unquestionably score the ball, shot a tidy 8-for-13 from the field including 5-for-7 from three to score 21 points. She recorded 2 steals on defense as well.
Those three players combined to score 66 of the Cougars' 77 points – not usually a recipe for success, but CSUSM made it work. Leading by 6 as the half and up by as many as 13 in the second half, the Cougars saw Corban cut the lead all the way down to 1 point with over 6 minutes remaining. Corban would pull even with 2 minutes left, but a layup by Dobner with 50 seconds to go broke the tie and proved to be the game winning bucket, as Corban missed a potential game tying three at the buzzer.
After a well-deserved day off Sunday, the Cougars will finish up their road trip with Western Oregon on Monday.
