Cal State San Marcos has named its new men's and women's golf coaches, the Athletics Department announced Monday.
Greg Hutton, formerly of Holy Names University, will take over the men's program, while Cindy Naval comes over from Paradise Valley Community College to lead the women's golf team.
Coming off a fifth place finish at last season's NAIA National Championships, Greg Hutton brings a track record of impressive success to the Cougars. In just four years at Holy Names, he transformed the small, private school's men's golf program into a national championship contender in the NAIA.
In 2006, Hutton led the team to a California Pacific Conference Championship in his first season as coach. The following season the squad finished second in the conference, and in 2008 Hutton led Holy Names to a 10th place finish at the National Championships and a #12 national ranking.
This past season, Holy Names won 8 of its 15 events, including the Cal Pac Conference Championship, en route to finishing fifth at Nationals. Hutton's squad produced five All-Conference selections, the Conference Player of the Year, and two All-Americans.
"I feel very fortunate to be given the opportunity to lead the CSU San Marcos men's golf team," commented Hutton. "With a talented group of young players, the future looks very bright for the Cougars."
Hutton takes over a Cougar men's golf team that finished fourth in the same conference grouping that Holy Names won last season. CSUSM finished the season ranked #21 nationally.
Cindy Naval comes over to the Cougars after a very successful run as Women's Golf Coach at Paradise Valley Community College from 2002 to 2008 that included an Arizona Coach of the Year award (2003) a number of her players earning post-season honors. In her final two seasons with the program, Naval's teams finished in 7th and 11th place at the NJCAA National Championships.
Naval has also spent 30 years at Deer Valley High School, and has been the Varsity Girl's Golf Coach since she implemented the program in 1992. She has served as the gymnastics coach and both varsity and freshman girls volleyball coach as well.
"I am so excited to be the women's golf coach at Cal State San Marcos," said Naval. "With many years of experience as a competitor and coach, I believe I will help the Cougars achieve great things. Thank you CSUSM for giving me this opportunity!"
Naval takes over a Cougar woman's golf team that has qualified for the NAIA National Championships in every year since it was founded in 1999. The squad most recently finished 12th at last season's NAIA National Championship.
Both coaches will begin immediately, with the teams scheduled to play a short fall season in preparation for the spring season leading up to the NAIA National Championships.
