Brett Campfield earned him his first individual win of the season, and helped CSUSM capture the A.I.I. Men's Cross-Country Championship on its home course on Saturday.
It's the second-straight conference championship for the Cougars, with both coming on their home course. CSUSM came in ranked #10, slight underdogs to #8 University of British Columbia, but the Cougars prevailed thanks largely to Campfield and teammate
Western Nelson sweeping the top two spots.
CSUSM finished with a total team score of 32, with UBC taking second at 45. Simon Fraser finished third with a score of 68, Soka fourth at 99, Southwestern College at 156, and Johnson & Wales sixth at 160.
Campfield, who had finished second on the team to Nelson in most races this season, made his move on the third of three laps on Saturday, finishing the 8K in almost a complete sprint with a time of 24:43, the fourth best in school history.
Nelson was the next runner to cross the finish line, coming in second with a time of 25:01.
Coming in third was Simon Fraser's Ryan Brockerville, who finished with a time of 25:19.
British Columbia's Luc Bruchet took fourth, running 25:28. His teammate Jordan Smith ran 25:31, placing fifth.
Soka's Aaron Perry placed 6th, coming in at 25:38. Next was Simon-Fraser's Keir Forster, running 25:44 to place 7th.
A pair of Cougars occupied the next two spots in the field of 48 runners.
Armando Lara placed 8
th at 25:47, and Jonathan Alpizar crossed the finish line a second later in 9
th place. British Columbia's Theo Hunt and Justin Kent took the next two spots, running 25:53 and 25:57.
But when CSUSM's Eduardo Mariscal crossed the finish line in 12th place at 26:02, the Cougars clinched their second straight A.I.I. title.
With the win, CSUSM earns the A.I.I. Conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships, November 20th at Fort Vancouver, WA.
