Box Score 2 Finishing up a pivotal home series against Oregon Tech, Cougar baseball made it 3 out of 4 for the weekend, sweeping the Hustlin' Owls at Poway High on Sunday. CSUSM won game one 4-3 in extra innings, and rode starting pitcher
Morgan Wynne to a 6-2 victory in game two.
The Cougars came out hitting in game one (scheduled for 7 innings), but the Oregon Tech outfield was up to the task early on, making two run-saving diving catches. Meanwhile, the Oregon Tech lineup was finding the gaps, taking a 3-0 lead through 3 innings.
Cougar starter
McClinton Heil entered the game with a sub-1.00 ERA, but due to the Cougars' depleted pitching staff was called into action on short rest. He battled for three innings, allowing three runs.
CSUSM cut into the lead in the bottom of the third, getting RBI's from
Scott Clement and
Austin Coleman. They would tie it up the following inning when
Louie Russo came in to score on a
James Scott RBI single.
Eric Julienne took over in the mound in the fourth, and one day after throwing three perfect innings continued to look outstanding in relief. Julienne threw four innings of one-hit ball, walking one and striking out five. He got help in the seventh from
Ricardo Moran, who made a great diving catch in right to end the inning.
The Cougars came about as close as a team can to winning it in the seventh, but were unable to push across a run, sending the game into extra innings.
After
Steve Triolo pitched a scoreless eighth, his team would end it in walk-off fashion.
Juan Perez led off with a pinch-hit single, and pinch runner
Johnny Omahen was sacrificed over beautifully by Scott. A
Ricardo Moran groundout moved the runner to third, and then Oregon Tech made the decision to walk
Dane Ponciano and Clement, loading the bases for scorching hot
Josh Miller. Miller, who is hitting over .400 on the season, wasted no time in making Oregon Tech pay, crushing the first pitch he saw over the left fielder's head for the game-winning base hit.
CSUSM, and Miller in particular, carried the momentum into game two. Scott started the game with a walk,
Ricardo Moran lined a single, and after a balk,
Scott Clement plated both runs with a single to the gap in right-center. That brought up Miller, and he absolutely unloaded on a two-run shot that landed on the football field beyond the left field fence, making it 4-0. On the day, Miller improved his batting average to a team-leading .417.
But the story of the game was starting pitcher
Morgan Wynne. The big righty not only gave the Cougars the innings they desperately needed, he was absolutely dealing for those innings. Wynne had everything working, going all nine innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits. He was very efficient on the day, striking out five and walking just two.
It's just the second complete game any Cougar has thrown this year, and the first for Wynne.
The Cougars picked up the scoring in the fifth, as Omahen led off with a double, and Scott traded places with him with a long double to right. Scott would come around to score on a Ponciano groundout, making it 6-0.
That was enough for Wynne, who worked around five errors in the field to close out a 6-2 victory for CSUSM. On the season, he's now 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA.
Cougar baseball will be playing at CSU San Bernardino on Tuesday.
