Cory Scoggin played for Cal State San Marcos men’s golf team when the athletics department was still in its infancy, and he still stands as one of the most decorated CSUSM student-athletes to this day. Scoggin competed from 1999-2004, graduating in the spring of ‘04 with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Performing Arts and a cumulative GPA of 3.46.

Scoggin was named NAIA All-America and Region II Golfer of the Year in 2004 after a stellar senior campaign. He shot 6-under-par at NAIA Regionals, helping CSUSM to a second-place finish and eventual tie for fifth at the NAIA National Championships. His 72.63 scoring average and 13 scores of par or better during that season are still school records. He finished runner up three times (Drake Invitational, Idaho Vandals Invitational, NAIA Regionals) and posted 66 (-6) in the first round of the NAIA regional tournament.

He was a part of the CSUSM squad that posted a school-record 26-under-par 838 at the Grand Canyon Invitational on April 6, 2004. The Cougars took home seven tournament titles during Scoggin’s career, including an NAIA Region II Championship in 2001.

Scoggin proved to be one of the best amateurs outside of the realm of intercollegiate competition as well. He won a United States Amateur Qualifier in 2003 and competed in the US Amateur Championship at historic Oakmont County Club in Pennsylvania.

In the CSUSM career record book, he is fourth in scoring average (75.02) and third with 21 rounds of par or better. He still holds single season school records from 2003-04 in total birdies (108), scoring rating (8), par 4 scoring (4.104) and par 5 scoring (4.7179).

Scoggin is in his second season as the head coach of the men’s golf team at the University of San Diego, an NCAA Division I institution. Since taking over the program in 2012 after four years as an assistant coach, he has led USD to tournament titles at the Bill Cullum Invitational (Oct. 22-23, 2012) and the Kauai Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2011). As an assistant, he helped guide the Toreros to their first West Coast Conference (WCC) championship in 2008, three consecutive NCAA National Championship appearances (2009-11) and four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances (2008-11).

He also served as head coach of the men’s golf program in 2005-06 at CSUSM.
