POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (30-14, 17-12 CCAA) clinched a CCAA Tournament berth for the third consecutive season with a 3-2 victory in its series opener over (RV) Cal Poly Pomona (27-19, 17-12 CCAA) on Thursday night at Scolinos Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Broncos opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single up the middle by Austin Duarte to make it 1-0.
- In the bottom of the third, CPP went up 2-0 on an RBI single by Evan Nahra.
- The Cougars scored their first run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to left center by Rees Kent to make it 2-1.
- Back-to-back RBI singles by Christopher Tampoya and Leighton Helfrick gave CSUSM its first lead at 3-2 in the top of the seventh.
- An insurance run was added by the Cougars in the top of the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice from Helfrick to go up 4-2.
- The Broncos put runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the ninth and scored one on a sacrifice fly to center by Ashton Romero, but Cougar reliever Zach Romero got a strikeout immediately after to end the game and clinch the CCAA Tournament berth for CSUSM.

- Cougar starter PJ Wendler (9-2) earned the win after striking out four while allowing two earned runs on five hits, two walks and two hit-by-pitches in 6.0 innings. His ninth win ties him with James Dykstra (2013) for the second-most victories in a single season at CSUSM.
- Bronco starter Andrew Campbell (10-3) took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while striking out three in 6.2 innings.
- Zach Romero earned his third save of the season for CSUSM.
- Zech Samayoa claimed his team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the season.
- Tampoya extended his reached-base streak to 18 games – the Cougars' second longest of the season.
- CSUSM moved into a tie with Cal Poly Pomona for second place in the CCAA standings.
- With the victory, the Cougars earned their first 30-win season in the program's NCAA Division II era (2016-present) and the fifth in program history.
