Cougars Fall to Warriors in Series Finale, 5-3

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (20-7, 7-5 CCAA) dropped its series finale to Stanislaus State (16-17, 7-9 CCAA) by a score of 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Dennis A. Pugh Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Warriors struck first in the top of the first with an RBI single up the middle by Chris Ortiz to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Cougars matched the Warriors with a run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to left field by Zech Samayoa to tie the game at 1-1.
  • A pair of two-run blasts to left and right by Zach Lewis and AJ Carter put Stanislaus up 5-1 in the top of the third.
  • CSUSM cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left by Jacob Embleton and a sacrifice fly to center by Christopher Tampoya.

  • Stanislaus reliever Evan Fanconi (2-0) earned the win after going 3.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout while allowing two walks, a hit and a hit-by-pitch.
  • CSUSM starter Luke Higgins (1-2) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning four in 2.1 innings.
  • Pierce Sailer picked up his fourth save for the Warriors, allowing just one hit in an inning of work.
