CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (15-5, 2-3 CCAA) secured a 5-4 win over Chico State (14-13, 3-6 CCAA) in the series opener on Friday night at Nettleton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI double to left center by Christopher Tampoya.
- The Cougars went up 3-0 in the top of the third on a bases-loaded balk that scored Leighton Helfrick and an RBI single by Stephen Espinoza.
- Chico got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Jesse Gadd scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
- A two-run single by Michael Weber put CSUSM up 5-1 in the top of the eighth.
- The Wildcats matched the Cougars with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Carson Case and an RBI ground out by Jackson Snitko to make it 5-3.
- Chico made one last run at CSUSM's lead in the bottom of the ninth as Roman Roberts hit a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Wildcats left the tying run at second as a groundout handed the Cougars the win.

- CSUSM starter PJ Wendler (5-0) earned the win by tying his season high with seven strikeouts while allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks in a season-high 7.2 innings. His 7.2 innings pitched were the most by a CCAA pitcher this season.
- Chico starter Jack Tews (2-2) took the loss after surrendering three earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two in 6.0 innings.
- Cougar reliever Trevor Morgan earned his first save of the season, striking out one while allowing an earned run on two hits in 1.1 innings.
- This was the Cougars' third consecutive win over the Wildcats dating back to last season.
- Espinoza and Weber each tallied their team-best seventh multi-hit game of the season while Weber improved his team-best hitting streak to eight games.
- Wendler now leads the CCAA with a 2.43 ERA and a .193 opposing batting average.
