SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (14-2, 1-0 CCAA) began conference play with a dominant 17-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino (5-12, 0-5 CCAA) on Friday afternoon at Dennis A. Pugh Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Coyotes started the game with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Tyson Pettingill and a two-run homer to center by Juni Rodriguez.
- The Cougars responded with a five-run bottom of the first on a bases-clearing triple by Stephen Espinoza and RBI singles by Max Shor and Rees Kent to go up 5-3.
- CSUSB knotted the game at 5-all in the top of the second on a Cougar throwing error and a bases-loaded walk.
- CSUSM retook the lead at 7-5 in the bottom of the second with an RBI fielder's choice from Christopher Tampoya and an RBI single to center by Espinoza.
- The Cougars put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the third as Kent scored on a Coyote throwing error before a sacrifice fly to center by Leighton Helfrick and a solo homer to right by Zech Samayoa to make it 10-5.
- An RBI single by the Coyotes' Dom Dominguez cut the Cougars' lead to 10-6 in the top of the fourth.
- CSUSM racked up seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles by Michael Weber and Kent, an RBI groundout by Helfrick and a grand slam by Samayoa to take a 17-6 lead.
