Cougars See Winning Streak Snapped; Second Game Suspended Due to Darkness

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (9-6, 8-2 CCAA) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped with a 16-8 loss to Cal State San Bernardino (9-9, 2-6 CCAA) in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The second game of the day was suspended due to encroaching darkness and will be completed on Sunday at noon with CSUSM up 17-5 in the top of the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Coyotes struck first in the top of the first with an RBI single up the middle by Jake Borst.
  • CSUSB went up 4-0 in the top of the third with a solo shot by Garrett Macias and a two-run double by Jeremy Giesegh.
  • CSUSM took the lead with a five-run inning in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by Sommay, an RBI single by Teunissen, an RBI single by Reece, an RBI double by Evan Scalley and an RBI single by Castaneda.
  • A sacrifice fly to right by Teunissen put the Cougars up 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Coyotes retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run double by Giesegh and a bases-loaded walk by Jason Shedlock.
  • CSUSB took a 12-6 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Jake Borst, an RBI single by Daryl Ruiz, a two-run homer by Giesegh and an RBI single by Shedlock.
  • CSUSM cut the deficit to 12-7 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to center by Luke Reece.
  • CSUSB's Giovanni Del Negro hit a three-run blast to center in the top of the eighth to give the Coyotes a 15-7 lead.
  • The Cougars' final run came on an RBI double to left center by Teunissen in the bottom of the eighth to make it 15-8.
  • The Coyotes plated the game's final run in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk by Macias at 16-8.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Coyote reliever John Pfeffer (1-0) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings and striking out four while allowing three runs on six hits and a walk.
  • Cougar starter Conner Gleissner (3-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches while striking out six in 4.2 innings.
  • CSUSM's eight-game winning streak was the longest in the NCAA Division II era (2016-present) for the program and tied for the sixth longest in program history.
  • The Cougars' two triples were a season best.
  • Sommay and Reece extended their reached-base streaks to 10 games while Sommay pushed his hitting streak to six games.
