Cougars Fall in Both Ends of Doubleheader at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (12-8, 11-4 CCAA) fell in both games of its doubleheader at Chico State (13-7, 8-7 CCAA) by scores of 15-4 and 3-2 on Saturday at Nettleton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chico began the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI bunt single by Elijah Pascual and an RBI single to left by Jeremy Keller.
  • A two-run blast to left by Mahaffy knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the fourth.
  • The Wildcats took a commanding 12-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with 10 runs, eight hits and two Cougar errors.
  • An RBI double down the left field line by Keller upped Chico's lead to 13-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • A night after hitting his first career homer on a grand slam, Castandea hit a two-run shot down the right field line to cut CSUSM's deficit to 13-4 in the top of the sixth.
  • The Wildcats took a 15-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single through the left side by Crane before a wild pitch and throwing error scored Keller.

  • Chico starter Marco Ibarra (3-1) earned the win after striking out three while allowing four runs on eight hits and one hit-by-pitch in 7.0 innings.
  • CSUSM starter Conner Gleissner (3-2) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one in 3.1 innings.
  • Phoenix Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 14 games while improving his hitting streak to 10 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got out to a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double by Lake that scored Teunissen after his one-out triple in the top of the first inning.
  • The Wildcats took the lead at 2-1 as Jesse Gadd hit a two-run double to left with two outs in the bottom of the first.
  • An RBI groundout by Chico's Stefan Foley made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the fourth.
  • CSUSM cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth with a two-out double to left by Castaneda.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Wildcat reliever Ryan Silvers (1-0) earned the win after 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one walk.
  • Cougar starter Sammy Murphy (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in 5.0 innings.
  • Chico's Scott Lewis recorded the save after allowing just one hit in an inning of work.
  • Phoenix Sommay improved his reached-base streak to 15 games while extending his hitting streak to 11.
