SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A high-scoring game began CCAA play for the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (1-5, 0-1 CCAA) as it fell 15-11 in the series opener against Cal State LA (7-4, 1-0 CCAA) on Friday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- LA took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single through the left side by Andrew Tovar before a two-run single up the middle by Isaiah Marquez.
- The Golden Eagles broke the game wide open in the top of the second with seven runs on five hits, including two home runs, to go up 10-0.
- CSUSM earned two runs back in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left center by Garrett Teunissen before Luke Reece scored from third on a 4-6-3 double play to make it 10-2.
- A solo homer by LA's Marquez in the top of the fifth put the Golden Eagles up 11-2.
- In the bottom of the fifth, CSUSM made it an 11-5 game on a fielder's choice and throwing error that scored Teunissen and Jordan Ku before Reece scored on an RBI single by Lake.
- A two-run blast by Tovar gave LA a 13-5 lead in the top of the sixth.
- An RBI single to short scored Ruben Cedillo in the bottom of the sixth to cut LA's lead to 13-6.
- The Golden Eagles plated their final two runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Elijah Jackson and Javy Espinoza to make it 15-6.
- McGrew made it a 15-7 game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI groundout to short that scored Chesterton.
- CSUSM made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. With two on and one out, Will Potter hit an RBI single up the middle to make it 15-8. With the bases loaded and two away, a wild pitch scored Niko Diaz to make it a six-run game. After Sommay was hit by a pitch to load the bases, McGrew hit an RBI single to left and made it 15-10. A bases-loaded walk by Victor Castaneda made it 15-11 and forced an LA pitching change in a save situation. A fielder's choice at second then ended the Cougars' potential comeback.

QUICK HITS
- LA starter Anthony Lopez (2-0) earned the win after throwing 5.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and four hit-by-pitches.
- CSUSM starter Sammy Murphy (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch in one inning of work.
- Golden Eagle reliever Anthony Diaz (2) picked up the one-out, four-pitch save as he came on with the tying-run at the plate.
- With the win, LA took the lead in the all-time series at 15-14, but CSUSM still has an 8-5 record when playing at home.
