CSUSM Falls In CCAA Tournament Opener to Chico State

CARSON, Calif.  – The third-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (27-19) fell 5-2 in the first round of the CCAA Tournament to the sixth-seeded Chico State (24-24) on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Kestler RBI double deep to center field that plated Waymire, who drew a leadoff walk.
  • Anastacia Alba knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Mia Santos to even the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
  • Chico put up four runs on three hits and two errors to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
     
QUICK HITS
  • Chico State starter Amelie Valdez (9-9) collected the win are tossing 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while fanning four batters.
  • Wildcat reliever Katelyn Oldwin picked up her first save of the season after throwing three perfect innings while recording two strikeouts.
  • CSUSM starter Savannah Coyle (15-7) took the loss after relinquishing five runs on six hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.
  • Kestler extended her streak of reaching base safely to 12 games, the third highest this season.


UP NEXT
The Cougars will now wait until Monday, May 8 for the NCAA Selection Show to see if they will advance to the NCAA West Regional on May 11-14. In the latest West Regional Poll released on Wednesday, CSUSM moved down one spot to No. 6. With hopes of staying in the top eight, the Cougars can punch their ticket to a second consecutive West Regional.
