SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Four members of the Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams will compete at the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning on Thursday, May 25 in Pueblo, Colorado, on the campus of Colorado State-Pueblo.

LAST MEET
- Nick Melanese broke the CSUSM school record in the 800-meter run with an NCAA provisional time of 1:48.59 while finishing third out of 86 on Friday.
- Trevor Boaz ran the second-fastest 1500-meter time in program history with an NCAA provisional time of 3:45.64 on Saturday night. His time was the fastest in the 139-man field.
-  Mia Salinas ran the sixth-fastest 800-meter time in program history at 2:12.44.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
- This will be the most student-athletes CSUSM has ever sent to the NCAA Championships.
- Nick Melanese will be the first-ever member of the CSUSM men's track & field team to compete at the NCAA Championships.
- Melanese enters with the eighth-fastest 800-meter time in Division II at 1:48.59 and will run in the first round's third heat on Friday at 5:15 p.m. (PT).
- On the women's side, Rasha Badrani and Mia Salinas will be the first CSUSM women's track & field team student-athletes to compete in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday at 6:40 p.m. (PT).
- Badrani and Salinas ranks 17th and 18th nationally in the event with times of 1:00.40 and 1:00.51, respectively.
- Luz Mercado will compete in the first heat of the 800-meter run on Friday at 5 p.m. (PT).
- Mercado has the 23rd-fastest 800-meter time in Division II at 2:09.68.
- Should any of the Cougars make it to Saturday's finals, the women's 800-meter run will take place at 5:55 p.m. (PT), the men's 800-meter run will occur at 6:05 p.m. (PT) and the women's 400-meter hurdles will run at 6:20 p.m. (PT).
THE OLSON FILE
- Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fifth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
- In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three individual CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five USTFCCCA All-West Region selections.
- In 2022, Olson guided both teams to a combined three individual CCAA Championships, 13 All-CCAA selections and five USTFCCCA All-West Region honors.
- Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
- Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
- In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
- A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
