SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (10-15, 4-11 CCAA) fell 8-6 to San Francisco State (17-11, 10-10 CCAA) in the series opener on Thursday at Maloney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-run homer to left by Sean McGrew.
- SF State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple by Nick Upstill, an RBI single by Michael Cunningham and an RBI single by Justin Clark.
- The Cougars knotted the game at 3-all in the top of the fifth with an RBI single down the left field line by Diaz.
- The Gators retook the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth at 5-3 on a sacrifice fly to right by Gavin Haimovitz that scored Cunningham while also scoring Kody Gardner on a throwing error.
- In the bottom of the sixth, SF State upped its lead to 8-3 on an RBI double down the left field line by Cunningham and a two-run single to center by Clark.
- CSUSM put a rally together in the top of the ninth with singles by McGrew and Freeman and Aoki getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Adams then drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs to make it 8-4. After an SF State pitching change, Pacino put a two-run single into center to cut the deficit further to 8-6, but the Cougars' rally came to an end on a sacrifice bunt, a foul out and a fly out to end the game.

- SF State's Nathan Shinn (4-2) earned the win after striking out six in 6.0 innings of relief while allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.
- Andrew Silva earned his second save of the season with just one hit allowed in 1.0 inning.
- CSUSM starter Conner Gleissner (1-4) took the loss as he allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk while striking out three in 5.0 innings.
- Luke Reece's 23-game reached-base streak came to an end while Nick Schnopp's 10-game hitting streak also ended.
