CSUSM Sweeps Friday Doubleheader Against Stan State

SAN MARCOS, Calif.  – The Cal State San Marcos softball team (26-17, 19-11 CCAA) tallied a doubleheader sweep over Stanislaus State on Friday. The Cougars took game one 4-3 before Paige Donnelly crushed a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three consecutive walks, Coyle blasted a line drive back to the pitcher for a single that plated Waymire before Donnelly came home on a throwing error to first base to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • In the second inning, Waymire put the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to give CSUSM a 3-0 lead.
  • The Warriors evened the game at 3-all in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of three CSUSM errors while putting together three singles.
  • The Cougars retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Steiner drew a leadoff walk and was replaced with pinch runner Klarissa Munoz, who advanced two bases on a sac bunt and a fly out before scoring on a wild pitch.  
     
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM reliever Savanah Coyle (13-6) picked up the win after tossing 2.0 hitless innings in the circle, recording one strikeout.
  • Cougar starter Jayline Sloss got a no-decision after 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four batters as three unearned runs scored.
  • Gutierrez extended her team-leading streak of reaching base safely to 19 games.
  • CSUSM's five errors were the most this season in a single game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars put up six runs in the first inning as Kestler, Steiner, Guiliano and Horita all tallied RBI singles while Gutierrez capped off the run with a 2-RBI single to left center.
  • Donnelly belted a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth after Madison Waymire drew a walk, ending the game due to the eight-run mercy rule.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Cougar starter Savanah Coyle (13-6) collected her second win of the day, tossing five shutout innings while allowing four hits and one walk.
  • Stan State's starter Kyndra Marzorini took the loss after going just two-thirds of an inning, giving up six runs on five hits and three walks.
  • Donnelly's home run was her eighth of the season, passing her home run total from her rookie season last year.
  • Gutierrez extended her team-leading streak of reaching base safely to 20 games.
