CSUSM Set for Series Finale with CSUDH, Host Series Against CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (11-17, 5-13 CCAA) will finish up its rescheduled series against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field. The series against the Broncos will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon before the series finale on Sunday at noon.

LAST WEEK
  • CSUSM took the third game of the series against Cal State Dominguez Hills last Tuesday with a 5-2 win and is now ahead 2-1 in the series.
  • The Cougars then fell in three of four games at San Francisco State over the weekend. CSUSM's lone win came in the third game of the series with a 2-1 victory. The Gators took the other three games by scores of 8-6, 5-0 and 7-2.

SERIES FINALE AGAINST THE TOROS
  • CSUSM and CSUDH will finally play the last game of their rescheduled series on Tuesday.
  • CSUSM has won the past two games against the Toros by scores of 6-4 and 5-2.

BRONCOS HEAD TO SAN MARCOS
  • Cal Poly Pomona comes into the weekend fresh off a series win against Cal State LA.
  • The Broncos fell 15-8 in the series opener and proceeded to take the final three games by scores of 8-2, 4-1 and 6-5.
  • This was CPP's fifth series win of the season and third in CCAA play.
  • The Broncos are currently third in the CCAA standings with a 13-10 conference record (.565).

THE GARCIA FILE
  • Head Coach Jose Garcia was announced as the new leader of the CSUSM baseball program on Aug. 1, 2022.
  • Garcia came to CSUSM from fellow CCAA member Chico State where he was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats.
  • Joining Chico's staff as a student assistant in Fall 2012, Garcia helped the Wildcats notch 286 victories, seven postseason appearances, two CCAA Championships, one NCAA West Region Championship and one College World Series appearance in 10 years with the program.
  • Serving as Chico's primary hitting and infield coach, Garcia coached the Wildcats' offense to a conference-record .344 team batting average while assisting the team to a 34-15 overall record in 2022 despite only returning seven players from the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
  • In 2017, Garcia helped Chico to another CCAA record with a win-loss total of 34-4 in conference play while also helping the team to an NCAA Division II-best .983 fielding percentage.
  • Garcia is a graduate of Chico State and earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching. He later earned his master's degree in School and Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching from the University of Missouri in 2017.
