No. 5 CSUSM Splits Nonconference Twinbill with Pace

SAN MARCOS, Calif – The No. 5 Cal State San Marcos softball team (14-5) split its nonconference doubleheader against Pace University on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field, defeating the Setters 3-0 in the opening game before falling 7-5 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first inning, the Cougars put a run on the board with a walk, hit-by-pitch and two fielder's choices.
  • An Albayati single down the left line plated Waymire from second base to double CSUSM's lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Arredondo sent the ball over the left center wall for a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-0.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starter Savannah Coyle (7-1) tossed 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while tallying five strikeouts.
  • Pace starter Gisselle Garcia (1-4) went 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks while fanning five batters.
  • Arredondo's home run was her second of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Setters took a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly, a Cougar error and a two-run homer by Brianna Shea to left field.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Waymire led off the inning with a triple to the right corner and came home on a sac fly to center by Donnelly to make it 4-1 Pace.
  • The Cougars cut Pace's led to 4-2 on Gutierrez's RBI double to right center that plated Arredondo, who led off the second inning with a walk.
  • Pace answered by adding two more runs in the top of the third on a CSUSM error and a Shea RBI double down the left line.
  • Waymire and Donnelly led off the third inning with back-to-back home runs to make it 6-4 Pace.
  • After three scoreless frames, the Setters tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh on a CSUSM error to clinch a 7-4 victory.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Pace starter Anna Acevedo (2-2) collected the win after going 7.0 innings, relinquishing four runs on seven hits, three walks and three wild pitches.
  • CSUSM starter Zoe Ballen (2-2) picked up the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits, one walk and one strikeout.
  • Tay Shelton went 4.1 innings with one unearned run on one hit and one walk in relief.
  • Donnelly extended her reached-base streak to 14 games.
  • With her pair of hits in both games, Waymire raised her multi-hit game total to a team-high seven.
