Big Fourth Quarter Lifts No. 15/RV Cougars To 62-52 Win Over Chico

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – For its fifth consecutive win, the No. 15/RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (18-3, 15-2 CCAA) posted a big 62-52 come-from-behind victory against Chico State (16-7, 12-5 CCAA) on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM trailed 17-14 after the first quarter after going 0-of-5 from beyond the arc and recording seven turnovers.
  • Vasquez tallied eight points and eight rebounds in the opening 10 minutes of play.
  • The second quarter didn't improve things for the Cougars as they shot 13.3% (2-of-13).
  • Chico State took its largest lead of the game at the 30 second mark of the second quarter on a jumper by Jordan Morris that made it 30-21.
  • Forrester sunk a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 30-24 Chico at the break.
  • In the opening half, the Cougars shot just 26.7% (8-of-30) while the Wildcats were 41.4% (12-of-29).
  • The Cougars started to chip away at Chico's lead in the third quarter with a 9-2 run to even the game at 33-all with a pair of made free throws by Dynnah Buckner.
  • CSUSM ended the third quarter on a buzzer-beating layup by Vazquez to put CSUSM up 42-41.
  • To open the fourth quarter, the Cougars put together an 11-0 run capped by a Dynnah Buckner second-chance 3-pointer to make it 55-43 with 6:49 remaining.
  • CSUSM maintained the double-digit lead, finishing with a 62-52 victory.
  • The Cougars shot 57.1% (8-of-14) in the fourth quarter while holding the Wildcats to just 28.6% (4-of-14).
 
FAST BREAKS
  • Vasquez's 19 rebounds were the second-highest in program history behind Heather Thompson's 20-rebound performance against Simpson on Dec. 14, 2013.
  • The Cougars outrebounded the Wildcats, 53-30, with 15 of CSUSM's coming on the offensive side.
  • CSUSM's 50 rebounds were the highest recorded this season. The last time the Cougars recorded more than 50 rebounds was on Dec. 29 in the triple-overtime victory at Cal State LA.
  • CSUSM tallied 34 of its points inside the paint while Chico notched 24.
  • The Cougars' defense prevented Chico from any second-chance points or fast breaks in the 40 minutes of play.
  • The Wildcats got 15 points off CSUSM's 15 turnovers while the Cougars converted seven points off Chico's eight turnovers.
  • With the win, CSUSM extended its win streak to six games against the Wildcats and are now 10-4 against Chico State in the all-time series.
  • The Cougars remain in second place in the CCAA standings, one game behind conference leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-1 CCAA) and two games ahead of third-place Cal State LA (13-4 CCAA).
