RV CSUSM Falls 70-65 to Chico State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (6-3, 3-1 CCAA) saw its six-game win streak come to end on Saturday afternoon in The Sports Center as the Cougars fell 70-65 to Chico State (5-4, 2-2 CCAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got off to a slow start as Chico State took an early lead at 11-5 at the first media time out with 4:39 remaining in the first quarter.
  • CSUSM battled back to only a 3-point deficit at 19-16 at the end of the opening quarter.
  • The Cougars were held scoreless for the first 2:26 of the second quarter before Mastora sunk a 3-pointer from the far corner to make it 25-19 Chico.  
  • At the second quarter media timeout, CSUSM trailed 29-19 after shooting 14.3% (1-of-7) from the field in the first five minutes.
  • The Cougars closed out the second quarter down 39-32 after raising their field-goal percentage to 38.5% (5-of-13) in the second quarter.
  • In the first half, 20 of Chico's 39 points came inside the paint.
  • The Wildcats outrebounded CSUSM 27-15 in the first 20 minutes.
  • Vasquez opened the third quarter with a jumper at the top of the free throw line.
  • After snagging a steal, Mastora ran the entire court for a left-handed reverse layup to make it 41-38 at 7:08 in the third quarter.
  • The Wildcats took their largest lead of the second half at 50-38 before Gallegos answered with a wide-open 3-pointer at the 3:24 mark of the third quarter.
  • A 3-pointer by Mastora in the far corner made it 50-46 Chico with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter.
  • A steal and a fast-break layup by Buckner followed by a Gallegos layup evened the game at 50-all to cap a 12-0 run and end the third quarter.
  • A second-chance layup by Ashleigh Barr put the Wildcats back on top at 52-50 to open the fourth quarter.
  • Vasquez answered with a baby hook shot to knot the game once again at 52-all at 8:50.
  • A Vasquez layup gave CSUSM its first lead of the game at 61-60 with 4:58 remaining.
  • A Gallego layup gave CSUSM its largest lead of the game at 63-60 at 4:31.
  • Back-to-back jumpers by Brandy Huffhines gave the Wildcats the lead at 2:41 and they never relinquished it, finishing with a 70-65 victory.

FAST BREAK
  • CSUSM shot 37.7% (23-of-61) from the field while the Wildcats turned in a 49.1% (27-of-55) field-goal percentage.
  • The Cougars posted a season-low 28 boards as they were outrebounded by Chico's 43.
  • The Cougars tallied 17 points off Chico State's 20 turnovers.
  • CSUSM recorded a season-low 11 turnovers in the contest.
  • Thirty-six of Chico's points came inside the paint.
  • The Cougars registered 11 points off fast breaks.
  • Chico State snapped a six-game losing streak against CSUSM.
  • The Cougars continue to lead the all-time series 10-5.
