CSUSM Ends 2023 With 66-63 Win Over Sonoma State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (7-3, 4-1 CCAA) got back in the win column on Sunday with a 66-63 victory over Sonoma State (8-4, 3-2) in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second consecutive game, the Cougars got off to a slow start as Sonoma jumped out to a 24-11 lead following the first quarter.
  • The Seawolves shot 52.9% (9-of-17) while the Cougars turned in a 30.8% (4-of-13) in the first 10 minutes of play.
  • CSUSM chipped away at SSU's lead in the second quarter, finishing the opening half at 33-31, after putting together a 46.7 field-goal percentage (7-of-15) while holding SSU to just 18.8% (3-of-16).
  • In the first 20 minutes, Sonoma led for 16:20 while the Cougars were on top for just the first 1:25 after a Gallegos' 3-point to begin the game.
  • A 3-pointer by Tameilau evened the game at 39-all with 4:59 remaining in the third quarter.
  • A Gallegos' jumper off a turnover gave CSUSM a 51-48 lead to end the third quarter.
  • The third quarter showed five lead changes and three ties.
  • The Cougars took their largest lead of the game after a pair of made free throws by Tameilau put CSUSM up 59-52 with 5:05 remaining in the game.
  • The Seawolves made it a one-point game at 64-63 after Jennifer Moreno made the back end of her free throws after missing the first one with 10 seconds on the clock.
  • Gallegos sunk both of her free throws to raise her point total to nine for the fourth quarter and secure the win with nine seconds remaining.
  • CSUSM led the entire fourth quarter after shooting 41.7% (5-of-12) and holding SSU to 27.3% (3-of-11).

FAST BREAK
  • CSUSM shot 42.9% (24-of-56) from the field while the Seawolves turned in a 35.7% (20-of-56) field-goal percentage.
  • SSU won the battle of the boards, 38-32, with 13 coming on the offensive side.
  • Both teams posted 14 turnovers with the Seawolves scoring 17 points off CSUSM's while the Cougars posted just 11 points.
  • Nineteen of SSU's points came from its bench.
  • The Seawolves led for 23:02 of the game while the Cougars led for 13:51.
  • The Cougars raised their lead in the all-time series to 11-5 and are now 7-2 when playing at home.
  • Gallegos' posted a season high with 22 points, her third consecutive 20 or more points in a game. 
  • At 4-1 in conference play, CSUSM is in sole possession of second place in the CCAA standings, one game back from Stanislaus State.
