No. 23/23 Cougars Pull Off 70-68 Victory at Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. – The No. 23/23 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (12-2, 9-1 CCAA) wrapped up a perfect weekend with a 70-68 victory at Cal Poly Humboldt (6-8, 4-6 CCAA) on Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jacks got on the board first with a Madison Perry jumper 13 seconds into the game.
  • Twenty-six seconds later, CSUSM answered with an old-fashion 3-point play by Kate Carlson that started a 9-2 run.
  • Dynnah Buckner scored her 1,000th-career point on her first of two free throws at the 7:36 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Jacks responded with a run of their own at 14-2 to retake the lead at 18-11 on a breakaway layup by Devon Lewis with 2:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Gallegos went coast-to-coast for a layup to even the game at 20-all to end the first quarter.
  • Humboldt's Kaz Parks opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer and layup to put the Jacks up 25-20.
  • The Cougars played catch-up the entire second quarter but couldn't quite close in on the Jacks and trailed 38-35 at the halftime break.
  • Both teams shot 50% from the field in the first half with the deciding factor being one more made 3-pointer by the Jacks and a 5-1 advantage on offensive boards.
  • The first bucket of the third quarter didn't come until the 7:47 mark when Gallegos drove in for a soft hook shot to make it 38-37 Humboldt.
  • CSUSM finally evened the game on a pair of free throws by Gallegos with 6:36 to go in the third quarter.
  • A Gallegos 15-foot jumper put CSUSM back on top at 43-41 at the 5:55 mark.
  • CSUSM took its largest lead of the quarter at 49-43 on a Vaquez layup at the 3:15 mark with the Jacks responding with a 5-0 run to make it a one-point game with just under two minutes.
  • Dynnah Buckner scored a buzzer-beating jumper to end the third quarter at 55-53 CSUSM.
  • The Cougars began the final quarter on a 6-0 run with 3-pointers by Forrester and Parker.
  • The Jacks evened the game with 3:03 on the clock on a Parks' 3-pointer.
  • Two made free throws by Dynnah Buckner put CSUSM in the lead once again at 63-61 at 2:41.
  • A Jayci Bayne 3-pointer in front of the Humboldt bench gave back the lead to the Jacks at 64-63 at 1:33.
  • Vasquez evened the game at 64-all after only making the front end of her free throws.
  • A Forrester 3-pointer from 36-feet out with 36 seconds remaining put CSUSM up 67-64.
  • Parry took a backdoor pass for a layup to make it 67-66 with 23.7 seconds on the clock.
  • After missing her first free throw, Forrester connected on her second to give CSUSM a 68-66 lead with 17 seconds remaining.
  • Parks evened the game at 68-all with 13.2 seconds remaining.
  • Gallegos scored on a pull up jumper to make it 70-68 with 2.1 seconds on the clock.
  • A missed over-the-shoulder 3-pointer by Humboldt gave CSUSM the 2-point victory.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • Dynnah Buckner became a member of CSUSM's 1,000 point club on Saturday. She joins Cassie Damyanovich (2011-15), Akayla Hackson, (2017-22), Savannah Camp (2015-18) and Heather Thompson (2011-15).
  • The Cougars finished the night shooting 42% (21-of-50) from the field while the Jacks turned in 42.9% (27-of-63).
  • The Cougars scored 26 points off Humboldt's 19 turnovers while the Jacks finished with 12 off CSUSM's 14 turnovers.
  • In games with more than 20 trips to the free throw line, CSUSM shot a season best 85.2% (23-of-27) while Humboldt was a perfect 7-of-7.
  • The Cougars finished with a season-low 18 rebounds as the Jacks pulled down 30 on the night.
  • CSUSM had its second-lowest foul total of the season with 10 while Humboldt committed 24 fouls.  
  • The contest had seven lead changes and 11 ties with Humboldt leading for 20:10 and CSUSM 16:12.
  • Neither team held a double-digit lead with CSUSM taking an eight-point lead (61-53) at 8:54 in the fourth quarter and the Jacks holding a nine-point lead (34-25) with 3:59 remaining in the second.
  • Vasquez's 14 points were a season best.
  • Gallego collected a season-high six assists.
  • This was the smallest margin of victory in the series' 13-game history.
  • CSUSM leads the all-time series at 8-5 and are 5-3 when playing in Arcata.
  • The Cougars kept their win streak alive against the Jacks at four games.
  • CSUSM remains in second place in the CCAA standings, one game behind leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-0, 10-0 CCAA).
