Cougars Hit the Road for Games at Fresno Pacific, Westmont

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (2-1-1) will hit the road for a pair of games this week at Fresno Pacific (1-2-1) on Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. and at Westmont on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.

LAST WEEK
  • CSUSM earned a pair of 1-0 wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Hope International last week.
  • Hannah Ramos scored her first career goal on Thursday against the Athenas before Danielle Paulson did the same on Saturday against the Royals with an assist from Jordan Galvin.
  • With the two victories, Head Coach Bobby Renneisen is now one win shy of 50 for his career – all at CSUSM.

THURSDAY NIGHT IN FRESNO

  • CSUSM will have a later start on Thursday night at Fresno Pacific as kickoff was moved back from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. due to the ongoing heat wave.
  • The Sunbirds have lost their last two games by scores of 4-2 against Stanislaus State last Wednesday and 2-0 at Cal State San Bernardino this past Saturday.
  • FPU began the season with a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Humboldt before taking a scoreless draw against Chico State.
  • CSUSM will be the fifth of six non-conference games against CCAA opponents for FPU.
  • The Sunbirds were picked to finish ninth out of 11 schools in the 2022 PacWest Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Bryana Yoshida leads FPU with three points on a goal and an assist while Tori De Leon and Alena Schenk have score the other two goals for the Sunbirds this season.
  • CSUSM is 5-1 in the all-time series against FPU and is 3-1 when playing in Fresno.
  • The Cougars have won the last four matches against the Sunbirds with the last coming in San Marcos in 2016.
  • This will be CSUSM's first visit to Fresno since 2013 when both teams were playing at the NAIA level.

SATURDAY AT WESTMONT

  • Saturday will be CSUSM's first game against Westmont since 2012 and its first visit to Santa Barbara since 2010.
  • The Cougars are 3-1-1 in the all-time series against the Warriors and are 1-0-1 when playing in Santa Barbara.
  • Westmont is 4-0-1 to begin the season with a 1-0 win against Southern Oregon, a 1-0 win at California Lutheran, an 8-1 win against Lincoln, a 3-0 win at UC Merced and a 1-1 tie against Saint Katherine.
  • Coming from the NAIA, Westmont was recently approved for NCAA Division II membership and will play a Division II schedule beginning in 2023-24 when it joins the PacWest Conference.
  • The Warriors have outscored their opponents 14-2 this season with Reese Davidson leading the team with five goals and 10 points.
  • In the NAIA Top 25, Westmont is currently ranked eighth.
  • Westmont was picked to win the Golden State Athletic Conference after winning the league title and advancing to the NAIA quarterfinals in 2021 and by returning nine of 11 starters this season.

2022 CSUSM WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES

  • CSUSM will begin its 2022 season with a very young roster as it welcomes 13 incoming freshmen to its roster of 28.
  • The Cougars return 12 from the 2021 squad, including top-goal scorers Chloe King, Sierra Moore and Hunter Morton and starting keeper Allison Marcure.
  • Marcure ended the 2021 season with the 25th-best save percentage in Division II at .855 and ranked third in the CCAA.
  • Graduate students Taylor Moorehead and Julia Atlee join CSUSM as transfers from San Diego State and Hartford, respectively.
  • In 2021, the Cougars finished the season at .500 with an overall record of 6-6-3.
  • CSUSM finished 10th in the CCAA standings with a 2-6-3 record.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 10th in the 2022 CCAA Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Starting this season, the NCAA has eliminated overtime periods from men's and women's soccer regular-season games. All games tied after 90 minutes will end in a draw.


THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his ninth year in charge of the women's program and 17th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 49-45-29 (.516) for his career with the Cougars.
