Cougars Drop Two at Seaside Invitational

SAN DIEGO – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (1-5) dropped a pair of matches on Friday in Point Loma's Seaside Invitational. The Cougars fell in four sets by scores of 18-25, 25-14, 17-25 and 22-25 to Simon Fraser (3-4) in the morning before being swept by host Point Loma (4-2) by scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 20-25.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SFU led a majority of the first set, taking a quick 10-4 lead to begin the match. The Cougars closed the gap to 11-9 on a solo block by Ridgeway followed by a kill from the middle blocker.
  • Simon Fraser recorded a 25-18 win in the opening set after making only four hitting errors while CSUSM registered 10.
  • The Cougars found their rhythm in the second set, putting together a 13-2 run that included seven unanswered points to take a 20-10 lead capped by a Turner kill.
  • Barr recorded six of her 18 kills in the second set to guide CSUSM to a 25-14 victory to even the match at 1-1.
  • SFU's offense exploded in the third set with a .400 clip (15k, 3e, 30ta).
  • The third set showed only one lead change with SFU reclaiming the match lead at 2-1 with a 25-17 win.
  • CSUSM led the entire first part of the fourth set – the largest lead coming at 10-5 on a SFU hitting error.
  • Simon Fraser rallied back to even the set at 16-all. At 20-20, Brooke Dexter tallied a pair of kills to give SFU a two-point lead. SFU claimed the match with a 25-22 fourth-set victory.

  • This was the first-ever match between CSUSM and Simon Fraser.
  • Barr recorded her second double-double of the season with her 18 kills and 13 digs.
  • Barr's 18 kills are the third most in a four-set match of her collegiate career.
  • Turner has registered double-doubles in assists and digs in four of the first five matches.
  • CSUSM recorded 51 kills to SFU's 48 in the match with assists and aces finishing in a stalemate at 45 and five, respectively. Simon Fraser tallied nine blocks to CSUSM's six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • PLNU gradually built its lead in the first set, taking it to 16-10 on a Torina Hommes ace.  
  • The Sea Lions took the opening set 25-18 after tallying a .355 clip and four aces.  
  • CSUSM found itself down early at 7-2 before closing the gap to 12-8 on a block by Madison Turner and Ridgeway.
  • PLNU took a 2-0 lead in the match after claiming a 25-16 win in set two.
  • CSUSM battled it out in the third set, forcing five tie scores and two lead changes, before PLNU once again pulled away to take a 25-20 third set win and complete the sweep.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Gwynnie Wentzel registered a career-high six kills and a .500 clip.  
  • CSUSM is now 1-2 when playing in the Golden Gymnasium and 2-7 overall against the Sea Lions.
  • The Cougars recorded just one ace to PLNU's nine in the match.
