Cougars Ready for 2022 CCAA Track & Field Championships

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – For the first time since 2019, the Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s track & field teams will make their return to the CCAA Track & Field Championships taking place Thursday through Saturday at Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State.

PREVIOUS MEET

  • The Cougars competed at UC Irvine’s Steve Scott Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
  • Bianca Encio posted a PR in the hammer with the fourth-best mark in program history at 42.48 meters. Her previous best mark of 42.03 meters came at the Rossi Relays on Feb. 26.
  • Trevor Nakata took 11th in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.52 ­– the best Division II mark in the event.

2022 CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • This will be the first CCAA Track & Field Championships since 2019 at UC San Diego due to the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
  • The final day of competition on Saturday will be streamed live on the CCAA Network.
  • Joshua Litwiller silvered in the men’s 10K at the 2019 Championships with the school’s then-second-fastest time of 30:12.48 – a time that’s no longer his best as he broke the school record earlier this season. He’ll carry the top seed time in this year’s 10K at 29:47.18.
  • Clarissa Garcia is the reigning champion in the women’s 800-meter as she recorded the then-third-fastest time in program history at 2:11.48. She improved her PR to 2:10.78 earlier this season and now has the second-best mark.
  • Isaac Muanza has the top seed mark among the competition in this year’s men’s triple jump with a mark of 14.70 meters.
  • Luz Mercado will be the one to beat in the women’s 1500-meter run as she has the top seed time of 4:34.29.
  • In the men’s 1500, Trevor Boaz has the top seed time at 3:46.82 – 1.69 second faster the closest competition. 
  • Boaz and Nick Melanese are the top two runners in the men’s 800 with seed times of 1:51.71 and 1:51.80, respectively.
  • Ana Mercado, Clarissa Garcia and Luz Mercado are the top three runners in the women’s 800 with seed times of 2:09.68, 2:10.78 and 2:15.08, respectively.
  • The men’s team took fifth place at the 2019 Championships while the women’s team finished seventh.
  • This is the first time since 2015 the CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held at San Francisco State.
  • Over the three-day meet, 38 individual championships will be crowned along with four relay teams.
  • The Gators are the three-time defending champions on the women’s side while Chico State’s men have won 15 of the last 16 championships since 2004.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The women's track & field team will field a roster of 35 for the 2022 season while the men's team will be comprised of 32.
  • The women's team will field 20 returners from the 2020 roster, and the men's team will return 13.
  • The women's squad will compete in four indoor meets and 15 outdoor meets in 2022 with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
  • The men's team will compete in 15 outdoor meets with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
  • Of the women's team's 19 total meets, the Cougars have competed in 15 of them once before.
  • On the men's side, CSUSM has previously competed in 14 of its 15 scheduled meets.
  • Returners Jonathan Burton and Justice Chima were named CCAA Men's Track & Field All-Stars after the abbreviated 2020 season while returner Clarissa Garcia earned the distinction on the women's side.
  • Garcia was named an All-Academic Athlete for the 2020 season by the USTFCCCA while the men's and women's squads were each named an All-Academic Team.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five All-West Region selections.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
