CSUSM Heads to Stanislaus State for Season Finale

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (15-31, 11-25 CCAA) will conclude its 2022 season at Stanislaus State (14-28, 11-25 CCAA) with the series beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars split the final home series of the season last weekend against San Francisco State.
  • After falling 11-7 and 6-4 in the first two games of the series, CSUSM won the third game 14-0 in seven innings before earning the series split with a 15-12 victory on Senior Day. 
  • Jacob Casson threw his second seven-inning complete-game shutout in the Cougars’ 14-0 win.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • At 166 career strikeouts, Garrett Apker is just three away from becoming CSUSM’s all-time career leader and surpassing Johnny Holtman’s career mark of 168 set from 2008-11.
  • Apker’s 73 strikeouts for the season rank second in the CCAA while his 10.83 strikeouts per nine innings leads the league and is currently the program’s single-season record.
  • Luke Reece has the conference’s third-best batting average at .409 and ranks sixth in the league with 61 hits.
  • Ethan Rivera leads the CCAA in sacrifice flies with seven this season.
  • Niko Diaz is the conference’s third-toughest player to strikeouts at 13.3 at-bats between strikeouts.
  • Kevin Van Linge leads CSUSM with 18 multi-hit games this season.
  • Aiden Richert currently has the longest-active hitting streak on the team at 13 games ­– tied for the second longest of the season.
  • Van Linge and Richert have reached base in 13 consecutive games.
  • With 38 double plays for the year, CSUSM ranks 20th nationally and fourth in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars have the third-best team batting averaging in the conference at .300.
  • CSUSM’s 26 sac bunts for the year rank second in the CCAA and 28th nationally.

SEASON FINALE AT STANISLAUS

  • CSUSM and Stanislaus last met in 2019 in San Marcos and saw the Warriors take three out of four games.
  • The Warriors own the all-time series lead at 8-6 and are 4-3 when playing in Turlock.
  • In the Cougars’ last trip to Turlock in 2018, CSUSM and Stanislaus split the four-game series.
  • The Warriors had a bye in CCAA competition last weekend with their only contest being a 5-4 midweek win over Holy Names last Tuesday.
  • In Stanislaus’ last CCAA series, the Warriors split their series with San Francisco State.
  • The Warriors are stealing the most bases per game in the conference at 1.64.
  • Stanislaus is hitting just .254 this season – next-to-last in the CCAA. It’s ERA also ranks 10th in the CCAA at 7.05.
  • The Warriors have the worst on-base percentage in the conference at .345.
  • Danny Murphy and Jonluke Goldman are tied for the team’s best batting average at .325.
  • Maxwell Pappas has the CCAA’s 10th-best ERA at 3.95 and ranks seventh in the league with 62.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 79-139 (.362) as CSUSM's head coach and is 254-375-1 (.404) for his entire head coaching career.
