Cougars Look to Improve Marks at APU Last Chance

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s track & field teams will wrap up their regular season on Friday and Saturday at the APU Last Chance in Azusa.

PREVIOUS MEET

  • The men’s and women’s teams each took third at last week’s CCAA Track & Field Championships at San Francisco State. It was each program’s highest-ever finish at the championship meet.
  • Prior to last week, CSUSM’s men had finished no better than fifth at the CCAA Championships while the women had never finished better than sixth.
  • Both teams also scored their most points ever at the CCAA Championships with the men earning 114.5 points and the women earning 85 points.
  • The men’s team combined for a program-best eight medals with Isaac Muanza taking gold in the triple jump and silver in the high jump, Justice Chima taking silver in the 200-meter run and high jump, Joshua Litwiller earning silver in the 10K, Nick Melanese taking bronze in the 1500-meter run, Chris Lee earning bronze in the pole vault and Jonathan Burton taking bronze in the 400-meter hurdles. 
  • The women’s team earned a program-best five medals with Devin Yarbrough taking gold in the long jump, Clarissa Garcia earning gold in the 800-meter run, Ana Mercado taking silver in the 800-meter run, Luz Mercado earning bronze in the 1500-meter run and Morgann Wilson taking bronze in the heptathlon.

APU LAST CHANCE

  • The two-day meet in Azusa will be the Cougars’ final opportunity to improve their qualifying marks for the chance to compete at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan.
  • CSUSM’s only other time competing in the APU Last Chance was in 2013.
  • The Cougars will be competing in the men’s and women’s 800, the men’s and women’s 5K, the men’s 400-meter hurdles, the men’s 200, the men’s and women’s 1500, and the women’s long jump.
  • Of those with NCAA provisional qualifying marks, Ana Mercado ranks 19th in the 800, Jonathan Burton ranks 31st in the 400 hurdles, Trevor Boaz ranks 32nd in the 1500, Clarissa Garcia ranks 32nd in the 800, Devin Yarbrough ranks 36th in the long jump, Joshua Litwiller ranks 38th in the 10K, Nick Melanese ranks 50th in the 1500 and Ruben Piña ranks 53rd in the 10K.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The women's track & field team will field a roster of 35 for the 2022 season while the men's team will be comprised of 32.
  • The women's team will field 20 returners from the 2020 roster, and the men's team will return 13.
  • The women's squad will compete in four indoor meets and 15 outdoor meets in 2022 with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
  • The men's team will compete in 15 outdoor meets with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
  • Of the women's team's 19 total meets, the Cougars have competed in 15 of them once before.
  • On the men's side, CSUSM has previously competed in 14 of its 15 scheduled meets.
  • Returners Jonathan Burton and Justice Chima were named CCAA Men's Track & Field All-Stars after the abbreviated 2020 season while returner Clarissa Garcia earned the distinction on the women's side.
  • Garcia was named an All-Academic Athlete for the 2020 season by the USTFCCCA while the men's and women's squads were each named an All-Academic Team.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five All-West Region selections.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
