Cougars Split Saturday Doubleheader at CSUEB

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (12-21, 8-15 CCAA) earned a 6-1 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State East Bay (16-17, 9-14 CCAA) after falling 8-6 in the first game of the day at Pioneer Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • East Bay took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Luke Novitski that scored Manny Garcia. An error in right also allowed Francisco Padraza to score from first.
  • CSUSM knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the third. After Emilio Luna, Adam Chadwick and Kevin Van Linge each walked to load the bases, Reece hit a one-out, two-run single to right to score Luna and Chadwick.
  • With two on and one out in the bottom of the third, Pedraza hit a two-run double to center and put the Pioneers back on top at 4-2.
  • The Cougars cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fourth with a two-out RBI single to center by Van Linge.
  • With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the sixth, CSUEB's Jacob Froess hit an RBI single to center and made it a 5-3 game.
  • The Pioneers went up 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a couple of singles and two Cougar errors.
  • CSUSM narrowed CSUEB's lead in the top of the eighth by scoring three two-out runs. After the Cougars grounded into a double play, Reece, Berohn and Stanford each hit an RBI single to trim the deficit to 8-6.
  • After Luna reached on a Pioneer error in the top of the ninth, the Cougars flied out twice and grounded out to first to end the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Pioneer reliever Blake Campbell (2-0) earned the win after throwing two strikeouts in 1.2 innings while allowing one run on five hits and one walk.
  • CSUSM starter Nolan Long (1-4) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out one in 6.0 innings.
  • Reece tallied his 13th multi-hit game of the season and sixth multi-RBI game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM began the game with a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout by Rivera that scored Kevin Van Linge and a sac fly to center by Berohn that scored Reece.
  • The Cougars made it 4-0 in the top of the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by Rivera and Berohn.
  • CSUSM took a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on RBI single to left by Reece and RBI groundout to third by Rivera.
  • The Pioneers broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fourth as Francisco Pedraza hit an RBI groundout to short to make it 6-1.
  • After CSUSM starter Garrett Apker exited the game after 5.0 innings of work, Pat MacDonald Jr. closed out the game with two flawless innings to end the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Apker (4-1) picked up the win after throwing eight strikeouts while allowing just one run on three hits and three walks.
  • East Bay starter Garrison Finck (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out one in 3.0 innings.
  • Reece tallied his 14th multi-hit game of the season, tying Rivera for the most by a Cougar this season.
  • This was Reece's seventh game with at least three hits ­– the most on the team this season.
  • Rivera earned his team-leading 11th multi-RBI game.
