CSUSM Heads North to East Bay for Weekend Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (11-19, 7-13 CCAA) will travel to Hayward for a four-game series against Cal State East Bay (14-16, 7-13) beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.

LAST WEEK

  • After winning the series opener against then-No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay by a score of 13-9 last Friday, CSUSM dropped the final three games 5-4, 11-1 and 9-0 to close out the weekend.
  • The win was the Cougars’ first at home against the Otters in eight tries and their 13 runs were the most ever scored in the all-time series against CSUMB.
  • CSUSM’s victory was its third of the season over a ranked opponent.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is in a four-way tie for seventh in the CCAA standings with Cal State East Bay, Cal State LA and Sonoma State.
  • The Cougars have tallied the 12th-most double plays in Division II this year with 27. With an average of .90 per game, they rank 10th nationally.
  • CSUSM’s 18 sacrifice flies rank 28th nationally and third in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars’ 11 triples rank 34th in the country and second in the conference.
  • Luke Reece and Ethan Rivera rank fourth and fifth in the CCAA for batting average at .402 and .393, respectively.
  • Rivera’s 11 doubles rank third in the league while his 34 RBI’s rank fourth.
  • Rivera also leads the CCAA and ranks second in Division II with seven sac flies.
  • Garrett Apker has tallied the second-most strikeouts in the CCAA this season with 57.
  • Apker’s 2.74 ERA ranks third in the conference while his 1.13 WHIP ranks fifth.
  • At 9.71 strikeouts per nine innings for his career, Apker currently holds the school record.
  • With 150 career strikeouts, Apker is 18 away from the CSUSM career record of 168 held by Johnny Holtman (2008-11).
  • Niko Diaz is the CCAA’s toughest player to strikeout with a strikeout every 15.8 at-bats.
  • The Cougars’ pitching staff is tallying 8.04 strikeouts per nine innings ­– currently the most in program history.
  • CSUSM has played the 13th-hardest schedule in Division II this season as its past opponents have tallied a combined record of 480-314 (.604) – the toughest in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars have the 28th-easiest schedule remaining in the country with future opponents combining for a 248-348 record (.416) – the third-easiest in the CCAA.

THIS WEEKEND AT EAST BAY

  • The Pioneers are coming off a series split at Stanislaus State, winning the final two games in the series.
  • This was East Bay’s second consecutive series split as it won the final two games in its series against San Francisco State the week prior.
  • The Pioneers’ fielding percentage of .968 ranks 52nd in Division II.
  • Batting .271 as a team, East Bay ranks eighth in the CCAA.
  • The Pioneers are the best in the conference when it comes to stolen bases with 48 for the season and 1.60 per game.
  • CSUEB’s team ERA of 5.49 ranks sixth in the league.
  • The Pioneers’ have the second-worst on-base percentage in the CCAA at .348.
  • Tommy Scavone has thrown a conference-best three complete games this season and ranks ninth in the league for strikeouts with 43. His WHIP of 1.19 ranks seventh in the CCAA.
  • Mark Woinarowicz has the fifth-most strikeouts in the CCAA with 48 and is allowed the 16th-fewest walks per nine innings in Division II with 1.06.
  • Matthew O’Mahony is the Pioneers’ top offensive option with a team-leading .337 batting average, 31 hits and 21 RBIs.
  • Essex Brown Jr. leads the CCAA in stolen bases and ranks 17th in Division II with 19.
  • CSUSM is 6-8 in the all-time series against CSUEB and is 2-5 when playing in Hayward.
  • The Cougars won the last series against the Pioneers in 2019 by taking three of four games in San Marcos.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 75-127 (.371) as CSUSM's head coach and is 250-363-1 (.408) for his entire head coaching career.
