CSUSM to Host SF State in Final Home Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (13-29, 9-23 CCAA) will play its final home games of the season this weekend as it hosts San Francisco State (16-24, 11-21) in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.

Prior to Sunday’s 11 a.m. home finale, CSUSM will honor seniors Garrett Apker, Zack Berohn, Jacob Casson, Tommy Fermin, Tommy Garcia, Gabriel Ponce de Leon, Mark Stanford, Griffin Teisher and Kevin Van Linge with a pregame ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

LAST WEEKEND

  • CSUSM was swept in a four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona last weekend by scores of 9-2, 10-7, 7-4 and 16-1.
  • Aiden Richert led CSUSM with a .500 batting average (7-for-14) with four runs, eight total bases, two stolen bases, a .571 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage in four starts.
  • Mark Stanford tallied a team-best three doubles and four RBIs for the series.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars have turned the fourth-most double plays in the CCAA this season with 33 and have the 27th-best double plays per game average at 0.79.
  • CSUSM has the CCAA’s fourth-best team batting average at .295.
  • With 24 sacrifice flies for the season, the Cougars rank fourth in the CCAA and 31st nationally.
  • CSUSM’s 23 sac bunts also rank fourth in the conference and 38th nationally.
  • As a team, the Cougars have recorded the fourth-most hits in the CCAA this season with 407.
  • Luke Reece leads CSUSM with a .428 batting average, ranking second in the conference and 24th nationally. He’s tallying the second-most hits per game in the CCAA and 19th most in the nation at 1.64 per game. His 59 total hits rank fourth in the league.
  • At 161 career strikeouts, Garrett Apker is eight away from breaking Johnny Holtman’s CSUSM career mark of 168.
  • Apker’s mark of 10.86 strikeouts per nine innings leads the CCAA while his 68 strikeouts for the season rank second.
  • Apker is allowing the second-fewest hits per game in the CCAA at 6.87 while posting the fourth-best ERA at 3.04.
  • CSUSM has three Cougars in the top 10 of the CCAA for being the toughest to strikeout. Niko Diaz is third with 12.6 at-bats per strikeout while Kevin Van Linge is fourth at 12.3 and Ethan Rivera is sixth at 10.7.

HOME FINALE AGAINST THE GATORS

  • SF State comes into the weekend off a series split at home against Stanislaus State. The Gators fell by scores of 4-0 and 8-6 in the first and final games of the series and took Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 5-2 and 13-12.
  • The Gators also played a midweek exhibition against Team Italy and won 7-1.
  • SF State is 6-14 on the road this season with its last road win coming just over a month ago on March 26 at Cal State East Bay.
  • SF State sports the worst team batting average in the CCAA at .251 with Daniel Santos leading the charge at .343. Santos leads the team with a .444 slugging percentage and ranks second for on-base percentage at .438.
  • Nathan Shinn leads the Gators with a 3.88 ERA while Gary Grosjean leads the club with 60 strikeouts, a 1.24 WHIP and 62.0 innings pitched.
  • CSUSM is 3-13 in the all-time series against SF State and has fell in the last nine meetings with the Gators. At home, the Cougars are 1-6 with the lone win coming in 2017.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 77-137 (.360) as CSUSM's head coach and is 252-373-1 (.403) for his entire head coaching career.
