Cougars Head to Pomona for Weekend Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (13-25, 9-19 CCAA) will travel to Cal Poly Pomona (22-15, 17-10 CCAA) for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at Scolinos Field.

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars fell in three of four games against Sonoma State this past weekend at CSUSM Baseball Field.
  • CSUSM earned a 6-1 win in the series opener behind Jacob Casson's nine strikeouts as he allowed just two hits and two walks in seven innings.
  • Griffin Teisher led CSUSM with a .474 batting average, nine hits, four doubles, six RBIs and a 1.342 OPS for the series.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM sports the second-best batting average in the CCAA at .296.
  • The Cougars 11 triples also rank second in the conference.
  • Turning .82 double plays per game, CSUSM’s average ranks 18th nationally.
  • With 23 sacrifice flies for the season, the Cougars rank 24th in the nation.
  • The Cougars rank fourth in the CCAA for doubles with 71.
  • Hitting .438, Luke Reece's batting average leads the conference and ranks 16th nationally while his 1.68 hits per game also lead the CCAA.
  • Reece currently has the Cougars' longest hitting streak of the season at 12 games and leads the team with 17 multi-hit games.
  • Ethan Rivera’s 40 RBIs lead the Cougars and eighth in the conference.
  • Rivera’s seven sac flies lead the CCAA and rank fifth nationally.
  • Garrett Apker’s 2.65 ERA and 65 strikeouts both rank second in the conference.
  • Apker’s 11.47 strikeouts per nine innings lead the league.
  • With 158 career strikeouts, Garrett Apker is 10 strikeouts away from Johnny Holtman's school record of 168 set in 2011.

THIS WEEKEND AT POMONA

  • The Broncos enter the weekend third in the CCAA standings and are a half-game ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona.
  • CPP has the seventh-best strikeout-to-walk ratio in Division II at 3.24 and ranks eighth for WHIP at 1.24.
  • The Broncos have the best defense in the conference with a .975 fielding percentage that ranks seventh in the nation.
  • CPP has drawn 204 walks this season – the most in the CCAA and 25th most in the nation.
  • The Broncos also lead in the conference in hits allowed per nine innings (8.37) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.2).
  • CPP ranks seventh in the CCAA with a .289 batting average.
  • Ricky Nuñez is the Broncos’ top hitter with a .391 batting average that ranks fifth in the CCAA, 54 hits that rank seventh and 38 RBIs that rank eighth.
  • Will Rudy is CPP’s ace with a 1.93 ERA that leads the conference and ranks 15th nationally. He also leads the CCAA with 67 strikeouts.
  • Rudy’s WHIP of 0.73 leads the nation.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 77-133 (.367) as CSUSM's head coach and is 252-369-1 (.406) for his entire head coaching career.
