Cougars Fall in Doubleheader to No. 21 Otters

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (11-18, 7-12 CCAA) dropped a doubleheader to No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay (22-10, 17-6 CCAA) by scores of 5-4 and 11-1 on Saturday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After a one-out double down the right field line by Reece and a bunt single to third by Rivera, an RBI fielder's choice to short by Berohn broke the stalemate as Reece scored from third.
  • The Otters knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single through the right side by Jacob Martin.
  • The Cougars retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Reece scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Rivera.
  • CSUMB took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Martin and a wild pitch that scored Adrian Collazo from third.
  • The Otter lead didn't last long as the Cougars went up 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice bunt by Reece that scored Jacob Savoy and an RBI single through the right side that scored Gabriel Ponce de Leon.
  • CSUMB tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth. After Collazo was hit by a pitch and a double to left by Jason Ajamian, Collazo scored from third on a sac fly to left by Nathan Flores.
  • CSUSM had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth with bases loaded and one out, but a 5-2-3 double play ended the inning.
  • The Otters took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning. With the runners on the corners and one out, Brady Miguel hit into a fielder's and scored the go-ahead run.
  • The Cougars had no answers in the bottom of the ninth as a line out and two ground outs ended the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Otter reliever Parker Fokken (3-2) earned the win after throwing 4.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing two runs on five hits, two walks and two intentional walks.
  • Cougar reliever Zack Jordan (0-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run on one hit, one wild pitch and a walk in 1.1 innings.
  • Rivera tallied his team-leading 14th multi-hit game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Otters started the game with a two-run homer to right by Brady Miguel to go up 2-0 in the top of the first.
  • CSUMB increased its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single to left by Jason Ajamian, an RBI double to right center by Jacob Martin and a two-run homer to right by Nathan Flores.
  • After singles by Rivera and Van Linge, Rivera scored from third on a passed ball and cut CSUSM's deficit to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • With two on and two outs in the top of the fifth, CSUMB's Nico Hartojo hit a three-run blast to left center and upped the Otters' lead to 9-1.
  • CSUMB plated two more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Chase Lindemann and an RBI single by Miguel to go up 11-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, two strikeouts and a fly out ended the game with a runner left on base.
 
QUICK HITS
  •  CSUMB starter Ryan Platero (4-1) earned the win as he struck out seven in 6.0 innings while allowing one unearned run on seven hits.
  • CSUSM starter Trevor Schott (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk in 2.2 innings.

CSUSM will look to draw a series split against CSUMB in the finale on Sunday at 11 a.m.
