Cougars Welcome Seawolves for Four-Game Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Returning home for its next-to-last home series of the season, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (12-22, 8-16 CCAA) will host Sonoma State (13-20, 10-14 CCAA) in a four-game series beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m.

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars fell in three of four games at Cal State East Bay. CSUSM lost 9-4 and 8-6 in the first two games, won the third game 6-1 and took a 5-2 loss in the series finale.
  • CSUSM picked up the 6-1 win behind another stellar outing by starting pitcher Garrett Apker as he struck out eight and allow just one run in five innings.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is posting the 14th-most double plays per game in Division II at .82. The Cougars’ 28 double plays rank 20th nationally.
  • With 20 sacrifice flies for the year, CSUSM ranks 27th nationally.
  • CSUSM’s 11 triples rank second in the CCAA.
  • Striking out 7.8 batters per game, the Cougars rank fifth in the league.
  • Luke Reece’s .434 batting average leads the CCAA and ranks 16th nationally. He ranks sixth in the conference in both hits (49) and on-base percentage (.484).
  • Ethan Rivera has tallied the fifth-most RBIs in the CCAA this season with 37 while ranking eighth in doubles with 11 and ninth for hits with 47.
  • Rivera’s seven sac flies ranks second in the nation.
  • Garrett Apker is the CCAA’s strikeout leader with 65. His 11.47 strikeouts per nine innings ranks second in the conference.
  • In the conference, Apker ranks third for ERA (2.65), third for hits allowed per nine innings (6.35) and fourth for WHIP (1.14).
  • Niko Diaz is the conference’s second-toughest player to strikeout as he’s recording a strikeout every 15.2 at-bats. Kevin Van Linge is the third toughest at 13.2 at-bats between strikeouts.
  • CSUSM has played the toughest schedule in the CCAA and 22nd toughest in the nation with past opponents having a combined record of 580-414 (.583).
  • With 158 career strikeouts, Garrett Apker is 10 strikeouts away from Johnny Holtman's school record of 168 set in 2011.

THIS WEEK AGAINST SONOMA STATE

  • The Seawolves are coming off a series win at home against Stanislaus State this past weekend as they took three of four games from the Warriors.
  • SSU sits in a tie with Cal State East Bay for sixth in the CCAA standings. CSUSM is two-games behind in eighth.
  • CSUSM is 7-11 in the all-time series against SSU but owns a 6-5 record when playing the Seawolves at home.
  • SSU has won six of the last seven games in the series.
  • The Seawolves’ best team stat is their .971 fielding percentage that ranks 25th nationally and second in the CCAA.
  • SSU ranks last in the conference for batting average (.251), hits (263), walks (91), runs (133), scoring (4.0 runs per game), doubles (45) and on-base percentage (.331).
  • The Seawolves’ pitching staff’s ERA of 5.64 ranks seventh in the league with pitchers getting 6.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Jason Doktorczyk has the best ERA on the team at 3.55.
  • Braeden Holliday leads SSU’s offense with a .356 batting average, a 1.056 OPS, seven home runs and 20 RBIs.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 76-130 (.369) as CSUSM's head coach and is 251-366-1 (.407) for his entire head coaching career.
