Cougars to Host No. 21 Otters This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (10-16, 6-10 CCAA) will host No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay (20-9, 15-5 CCAA) in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.

LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM took one game in its four-game series last weekend at then-No. 18 Chico State.
  • CSUSM fell by scores of 18-4, 11-3 and 10-6 before avoiding the series sweep with a 2-1 win on Sunday.
  • Garrett Apker threw his second complete game of the season on Sunday while tossing 11 strikeouts.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM sits in a tie for sixth in the CCAA standings with Cal State LA.
  • Garrett Apker is 25 strikeouts away from the CSUSM career record with 143. The current record belongs to Johnny Holtman (2008-11) at 168.
  • Apker’s 50 strikeouts for the season and 11.54 strikeouts per nine innings both rank second in the league.
  • Apker’s 2.54 ERA ranks fourth in the conference while his WHIP of 1.15 ranks sixth.
  • Apker currently holds the CSUSM career record for strikeouts per nine innings with 9.75.

THIS WEEK AT HOME AGAINST THE OTTERS

  • The No. 21 Otters are coming off a series sweep of Stanislaus State with wins of 9-1, 13-5, 5-4 and 19-6.
  • CSUMB is second in the CCAA standings – a half game behind now-No. 14 Chico State.
  • The Otters are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are 5-4 when playing on the road.
  • Monterey Bay has the best team ERA in the CCAA and ranks 20th nationally at 3.63.
  • CSUMB also has the best WHIP in the league and ranks 16th in Division II at 1.27.
  • The Otters walk very few batters with an average of 3.00 per nine innings and rank 15th nationally.
  • Offensively, CSUMB ranks seventh in the CCAA with a .277 batting average, but it ranks third in scoring at 7.3 runs per game.
  • Ethan McRae has the seventh-best ERA in the nation at 0.92.
  • The duo of Brady Miguel and Jason Ajamian rank sixth and seventh in the CCAA with batting averages of .381 and .379, respectively.
  • Ajamian leads the CCAA with 34 RBIs while Miguel has the second-best on-base percentage in the league at .508.
  • CSUSM is 3-11 in the all-time series against CSUMB and is 0-7 against the Otters in San Marcos.
  • This will be the first series between the Cougars and Otters since 2019 – a series both teams split in Seaside.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 74-124 (.374) as CSUSM's head coach and is 249-360-1 (.409) for his entire head coaching career.
