Cougars to Continue CCAA Play at No. 18 Chico State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (9-13, 5-7 CCAA) will head to No. 18 Chico State (19-5, 12-3) for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.

LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM took the first three games against Cal State San Bernardino to win the four-game series against Coyotes.
  • The Cougars earned an 11-9 win in the series opener on Friday as CSUSM rallied from a 6-3 deficit with eight consecutive runs.
  • CSUSM earned the series win with a doubleheader sweep of CSUSB by scores of 6-4 and 2-0 on Saturday. In the second game, Cougar starter Jacob Casson threw a complete-game shutout in seven innings while striking out five.
  • The Coyotes won the series final 10-3 on Sunday. With his 18th career sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth inning, Griffin Teisher became CSUSM's all-time leader in the category.

  • With its three victories this past weekend, CSUSM jumped to seventh in the CCAA standings.
  • Tallying six sacrifice flies this season, Ethan Rivera ranks second in Division II and leads the CCAA.
  • Rivera has a conference-best .415 batting average and 1.55 hits per game. He ranks fifth in the league with 26 RBIs and seventh with 34 hits.

THIS WEEKEND AT CHICO

  • At 12-3, the Wildcats sit on top of the CCAA standings with 1.5-game lead over Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
  • Chico is 13-1 at home this season with its lone loss coming in the series finale against San Francisco State.

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 73-121 (.376) as CSUSM's head coach and is 248-357-1 (.410) for his entire head coaching career.
