CSUSM Clinches Series Win in Doubleheader Sweep of CSUSB

SAN MARCOS – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (9-12, 5-6 CCAA) clinched the series win against Cal State San Bernardino (13-12, 9-6 CCAA) with a pair of 6-4 and 2-0 wins in a doubleheader at CSUSM Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSB got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After getting on base due to a CSUSM throwing error and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Brandon Galindo scored on an RBI single to center by Darryl Ruiz.
  • CSUSM took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI double to right center by Adam Chadwick and an RBI single to right center by Demetrius Freeman.
  • The Coyotes knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the third with a one-out RBI single through the right side by Ruiz.
  • CSUSB retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning at 3-2. After Deshawn Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, a single through the right side by Jake Borst put him on third, but a bobbled ball in right allowed him to score on the error.
  • CSUSM posted a four-run seventh to go up 6-3. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Van Linge hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Luna from second. A sacrifice fly to left by Ethan Rivera scored Reece and put CSUSM up 4-3. With two on and one out, Berohn hit an RBI double to left center to score Van Linge. Griffin Teisher then wrapped up the scoring by coming home from third on a two-out wild pitch to the backstop.
  • The Coyotes' Johnson led off the top of the ninth with a solo shot to center. After a CSUSB double, Pat MacDonald Jr. came on in relief and picked up his first save of the year with a groundout, pop up and fly out.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM reliever Tommy Garcia (2-2) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings and allowing just two hits and two walks.
  • CSUSB starter Austyn Coleman (3-1) took his first loss after allowing six runs on 12 hits, two walks and a wild pitch in 6.1 innings.
  • Cougar starter Nolan Long struck out eight and allowed three runs (two unearned) on five hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch in five innings.
  • Van Linge increased his reached-base streak to 13 games while Rivera upped his hitting streak to eight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A solo shot to left by Berohn opened up the scoring in bottom of the second inning and put the Cougars up 1-0.
  • CSUSM made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third with one out, a sacrifice fly to right by Rivera scored Luna.
  • Pitching with a lead, Casson made quick work of the Coyotes' lineup as he allowed just two hits over the next four innings to secure the series win and shutout.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Casson (1-0) tallied a complete-game shutout as he rang up five strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one walk in seven innings on only 76 pitches.
  • Coyote starter Andres Quinones (2-3) took the loss as he allowed both Cougar runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.
  • This was CSUSM's second straight series win against CSUSB, and the Cougars now have wins in six of the last seven against the Coyotes.
  • Van Linge upped his reached-base streak to 14 games while Rivera's eight-game hitting streak came to an end.
  • This was CSUSM's second shutout of the season.
  • The Cougars' four hits were their fewest of the season.
  • CSUSM has recorded a sac fly in four consecutive games.
