Cougars Head to Point Loma's Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s track & field teams will head to Point Loma for the annual Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

PREVIOUS MEET

  • At the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, Ana Mercado posted the third-fastest 800-meter run time in program history with an NCAA Division II provisional time of 2:11.33.
  • Amaya Mahmoud improved her PR with the second-best performance in school history at 11.46 meters – .01 better than her previous best.
  • Morgann Wilson set a new PR in the javelin at 33.51 meters and came in with the eighth-best throw in program history – .57 better than her old mark.
  • Joshua Litwiller won the 3,000-meter run with the fourth-fastest time in program history at 8:33.33. Teammate Ruben Piña finished second with the sixth-fastest time in school history at 8:35.70.
  • Nick Melanese won the 800-meter run with the third-fastest time in program history at 1:51.80. Teammate Trevor Boaz placed second with the fourth-fastest time in team history at 1:52.03.

ROSS & SHARON IRWIN INVITATIONAL

  • This will be the Cougars’ fourth consecutive season competing at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational, but it will the first time the meet has occurred since 2019.
  • CSUSM was scheduled to compete in the 2020 meet before the rest of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • At the 2019 meet, CSUSM’s men took fourth with 159 points while the women took seventh with 93 points.
  • Including CSUSM, there will be 16 teams present at the meet including Augsburg, Babson, Biola, Chapman, Concordia University Irvine, Marymount, Middlebury, Navy, Point Loma, St. Thomas (Texas), San Diego, Soka, The Master’s, Tufts, UC San Diego and Vanguard.
  • Field events will get underway at 9 a.m. and will be followed by track events starting at 11:30 a.m.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The women's track & field team will field a roster of 35 for the 2022 season while the men's team will be comprised of 32.
  • The women's team will field 20 returners from the 2020 roster, and the men's team will return 13.
  • The women's squad will compete in four indoor meets and 15 outdoor meets in 2022 with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
  • The men's team will compete in 15 outdoor meets with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
  • Of the women's team's 19 total meets, the Cougars have competed in 15 of them once before.
  • On the men's side, CSUSM has previously competed in 14 of its 15 scheduled meets.
  • Returners Jonathan Burton and Justice Chima were named CCAA Men's Track & Field All-Stars after the abbreviated 2020 season while returner Clarissa Garcia earned the distinction on the women's side.
  • Garcia was named an All-Academic Athlete for the 2020 season by the USTFCCCA while the men's and women's squads were each named an All-Academic Team.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five All-West Region selections.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
