Cougars to Host Coyotes in Four-Game Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-12, 2-6 CCAA) will host Cal State San Bernardino (13-9, 9-3 CCAA)  in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.

LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM was swept in their first road series of the season at Cal State Dominguez Hills last weekend.
  • The Cougars fell by scores of 9-5, 17-9, 7-2 (7 inn.) and 7-6.
  • CSUSM nearly avoided the sweep in the series finale on Sunday, but CSUDH hit a walk-off homer to take the game.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM has the fourth-best batting average in the CCAA at .297.
  • The Cougars have tallied 20 triples for the year - the second most in the CCAA and 20th most in the nation.
  • CSUSM is averaging the 26th most double plays per game in the nation at .83.
  • The Cougars’ .401 on-base percentage ranks third in the CCAA while their .409 slugging percentage ranks fifth.
  • CSUSM’s 11 sacrifice flies rank 32nd nationally.
  • The Cougars are the fourth-best scoring team in the conference at 7.4 runs per game.
  • Ethan Rivera and Kevin Van Linge rank second and third in the CCAA with batting averages of .435 and .433, respectively.
  • With 30 hits, Rivera has the third most in the CCAA while his 22 RBIs rank fifth.
  • Van Linge has the third-best on-base percentage in the league at .547.
  • Garrett Apker has the fifth-best ERA in the CCAA at 2.77. He’s allowing just 5.88 hits per nine innings - the second-best average in the conference.
  • Rivera has a team-best six-game active hitting streak – tied for the second longest on the team this season.
  • Rivera also leads the team with nine multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games.
  • Van Linge has reached base in 11 consecutive games – the longest by a Cougar this season.

THIS WEEKEND AGAINST THE COYOTES

  • CSUSB is in a three-way tie for first in the CCAA standings with a 9-3 record.
  • Last weekend, the Coyotes took the series against Stanislaus State with wins in the final three games (14-6, 18-9, 11-2) after falling 7-5 in the opener.
  • Right-hander Raul Salazar was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week after striking out 14 in seven innings of work against the Warriors on Sunday.
  • The Coyotes have turned the 13th-most double plays in Division II this season with 18.
  • CSUSB leads the CCAA in hits (229), home runs (27) and slugging (.488). 
  • The Coyotes’ team batting average ranks third in the CCAA at .306 while its team ERA ranks fifth at 5.42.
  • Deshawn Johnson is the team’s leading hitter with a .398 batting average while Kyle Csakan ranks 10th nationally with nine home runs.
  • Pitcher Andres Quinones has the 11th-best ERA in the CCAA at 3.47
  • The Cougars are 10-16 in the all-time series against the Coyotes are are 4-7 when playing at home.
  • CSUSM and CSUSB last played in 2019 and saw the Cougars win three of four games to win the series.
  • The Coyotes were picked to finish 10th in the CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 70-120 (.368) as CSUSM's head coach and is 245-356-1 (.408) for his entire head coaching career.
