CSUSM Heads to Dominguez Hills for Season's First Road Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-8, 2-2 CCAA) will continue CCAA play this weekend with a four-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-8, 5-3 CCAA) beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. in Carson.

LAST WEEK

  • CSUSM began CCAA play with a series split against Cal State LA.
  • The Cougars began the series with a 10-0 shutout of the Golden Eagles on Saturday before falling 10-2 and 21-7 in Sunday’s doubleheader.
  • CSUSM ended the series with a high-scoring 21-18 victory on Monday.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is the third-best hitting team in the CCAA with a batting average of .300.
  • The Cougars are tied for the second-most triples in the conference with seven.
  • CSUSM has the third-best on-base percentage in the league at .410 and ranks fifth for slugging at .412.
  • The Cougars are the third-best scoring team in the CCAA at 8.0 runs per game.
  • Niko Diaz is the 19th-toughest player to strike out in Division II with a strikeout every 25.5 at-bats.
  • Kevin Van Linge leads the CCAA with a .460 batting average. Luke Reece ranks fourth at .417, and Ethan Rivera is eighth at .396.
  • Van Linge’s .542 on-base percentage ranks second in the conference while 1.64 hits per game also ranks second.
  • Rivera ranks fifth in the CCAA with 19 RBIs this season.
  • Nolan Long is tallying 12.86 strikeouts per nine innings, ranking second in the CCAA. Garrett Apker is fifth at 12.15.
  • Apker has the fourth-best ERA in the CCAA at 1.35. He’s allowing the second-fewest hits per nine innings in the league at 4.95.
  • Van Linge and Rivera each have a team-high six multi-hit games.
  • Rivera also leads the team with six multi-RBI games.

COUGARS AT TOROS

  • The Toros are coming off a series split at Stanislaus State as they took the first game 11-1, fell by scores of 3-1 and 4-1 in Saturday’s doubleheader and won 10-2 in the finale.
  • CSUDH is 7-3 at home this season.
  • The Toros currently sit fourth in the CCAA standings at 5-3.
  • Dominguez Hills has tallied the fourth-most double plays in the nation with 17.
  • The Toros are allowing just 3.02 walks per nine innings ­– the 14th-best average in the nation.
  • CSUDH ranks second in the CCAA in doubles (39), ERA (4.17), home runs (17) and WHIP (1.36).
  • The Toros’ team batting average of .278 ranks fifth in the league.
  • Scott Ogrin has hit the 15th-most doubles in Division II with eight. He also has the second-most home runs in the CCAA with five.
  • Anthony Accordino has the most RBIs in the conference with 22 and leads the team with a .349 batting average.
  • Damon Treadwell is the Toro’s best starting pitcher with a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings while striking out 19 with an opponent batting average of .250.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 70-116 (.376) as CSUSM's head coach and is 245-352-1 (.411) for his entire head coaching career.
