CSUSM Begins 2022 Baseball Season on Sunday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – After 700 days since its last game, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team will begin its 2022 season at home with a doubleheader against Regis on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. before hosting Concordia University Irvine in a midweek contest on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

 

Spectators will not be permitted at Sunday’s doubleheader against Regis, but they can catch the action with a subscription to the CCAA Network on CCAANetwork.com. 

 

Fans will be welcome to attend games at CSUSM Baseball field starting on Tuesday against CUI. Masks must be worn in the general seating area and on paved surfaces surrounding the venue.

LAST APPEARANCE

  • CSUSM last played on March 8, 2020 against UC San Diego before the rest of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Cougars ended the abbreviated 2020 season with an overall record of 4-18 and 3-13 in CCAA play.
  • The Cougars had no shortage of speed on the basepaths as CSUSM tied for the second-most triples in the CCAA in 2020 with seven while also tying for the second-most stolen bases with 26.

SEASON OPENER AGAINST REGIS

  • CSUSM and Regis will meet for the very first time on Sunday.
  • The Rangers will complete a four-game series at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday evening before traveling down to San Marcos.
  • Regis fell 6-2 to CUI in its season opener on Thursday before also taking a 10-3 loss on Friday.
  • The Rangers played 40 games in 2021, finishing with an overall record of 21-19 while placing fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) with a 17-17 record.
  • Garrett Apker will take the hill for the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against Regis.
  • The veteran right-hander made five starts and one relief appearance in 2020 while throwing a team-high 31 strikeouts in 21.1 innings of work.
  • Right-hander Tommy Garcia will get the nod for the second game on Sunday.
  • Garcia made four starts with three relief appearances in 2020 while tossing 23.1 innings with eight strikeouts.

MIDWEEK CONTEST AGAINST CUI

  • The Eagles will wrap up their four-game series against Regis before facing the Cougars on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday will mark the 34th meeting between CSUSM and CUI with the Eagles owning the series lead at 19-14.
  • The Cougars have a narrow 7-6 lead in the series when playing games at home.
  • CSUSM and CUI last met in 2019 as the Eagles took two of three in the series.
  • This will be CUI’s first visit to San Marcos since 2017. 
  • The Eagles played 36 games in 2021, finishing with an overall record of 21-15 while placing second in the Southern California Pod with a 12-12 record.
  • Redshirt freshman Christian Becerra will take the ball for the midweek contest against CUI.
  • The right-hander will be making his first collegiate start as he last competed in 2020 for Madison High School in San Diego.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 roster in Demetrius Freeman, Emilio Luna, Griffin Teisher, Niko Diaz, Adam Lovato, Ricky Maytorena, Graham Cumming, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin and Johnathan Combs.
  • With newcomers from the 2021 and 2022 rosters combined, 25 Cougars will don Cougar blue for the very first time.
  • Athletically, CSUSM is made up of one redshirt senior, six redshirt juniors, six redshirt sophomores, 17 redshirt freshmen and six true freshmen.
  • The Cougars are comprised of 11 right-handed pitchers, nine infielders, six left-handed pitchers, six outfielders and four catchers.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish 11th in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE GUILIANO FILE

  • Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his sixth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
  • Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
  • Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
  • Guiliano is 64-108 (.372) as CSUSM's head coach and is 239-344-1 (.410) for his entire head coaching career.
