Cougars Open 2022 at CUI Kickoff Classic

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  Playing for the first time in 698 days, the Cal State San Marcos softball team will open its 2022 season at the Concordia University Irvine Kickoff Classic this weekend. The Cougars will face Montana State Billings (9 a.m.) and Azusa Pacific (11 a.m.) on Friday before taking on Dominican (2:15 p.m.) and Western Oregon (7 p.m.) on Saturday and will wrap up the weekend against Holy Names (11 a.m.) on Sunday. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars saw their season halted just days after facing Team USA in an exhibition game on March 8 in Irvine.
  • CSUSM was only able to compete in 19 games before the rest of the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and accumulated a 7-12 record.

CUI KICKOFF CLASSIC

  • The last time the Cougars took the field was on March 8 in the exhibition against Team USA as they prepared to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. CSUSM evened the game at 3-3 off a Kayla Mack 3-RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. Team USA would would eventually win the game 9-3.
  • The Cougars will open the tournament with back-to-back games on Friday, taking on Montana State Billings at 9 a.m. before facing Azusa Pacific at 11 a.m.
  • CSUSM is 2-0 in the all-time series against the MSUB Yellowjackets with its most recent meeting resulting in a 9-4 victory at the 2019 Tournament of Champions (TOC) in Turlock.
  • CSUSM holds a 13-10 lead in the all-time series against APU. In the teams' first meeting at a neutral site in 2020, APU snagged a 4-3 win at the CUI Kickoff Classic.
  • On Saturday, the Cougars will play Dominican at 2:15 p.m. before having the opportunity to play under the lights at 7 p.m. against Western Oregon.
  • After dropping their first meeting against the Penguins, CSUSM has dominated the series with a 7-1 record. The Cougars pulled out a 5-4 victory over Dominican at the 2019 TOC.
  • This will mark the first meeting between CSUSM and Western Oregon in the Cougars' 16-year history.
  • The Cougars will wrap up the weekend on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against Holy Names.
  • CSUSM has a 10-1 lead in the all-time series against Holy Names. The last time these two teams met was at the 2019 TOC with the Cougars coming out on top at 4-2.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
