CSUSM Falls 7-2 in Series Opener to Colorado School of Mines

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (2-3) suffered a 7-2 loss in its series opener against Colorado School of Mines (9-0) on Friday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mines got on the board first in the top of the second inning as Wayne Moeck scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch to make it 1-0. 
  • In the top of the second, the Orediggers made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single by Brady Veltien before a two-run double to left center by Toby Scoles.
  • Mines made it a six-run game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to left by Veltien before Moeck earned an RBI on a ground-rule double to center.
  • The Orediggers' hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Danny McDermott to give Mines a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
  • CSUSM broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth as Rivera singled down the right field line with bases loaded to score Van Linge and Emilio Luna, making it a 7-2 game.
  • The remaining three innings were scoreless, handing Mines the series-opening win.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Mines starting pitcher Kevin Zapanta (3-0) earned the win after throwing 6.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing two runs on six hits and two hit-by-pitches.
  • CSUSM starter Pat MacDonald Jr. (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 3.0 innings while recording three strikeouts.
  • Diaz improved his hitting streak to five games with a single to right in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Diaz, Luna and Van Linge have each reached base in all five games this season.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between CSUSM and Mines.
